Another new, nice star created by Hollywood: Keanu Reeves. In his spectular portrayal of a rentboy he has created a lot of furore that could almost hurt a career begun with such promise. But conformist behaviour isn't always the path to fame! It seems that Hollywood is still that place in the world where good-looking men with charisma explode onscreen as though they came directly from a conveyor belt. Past crises in the film business and the seeming dominance of television haven't changed that. Just the opposite, in fact: a lot of the new young stars started in TV, having had their first chances to showcase their abilities in front of an audience and the studio bosses there. And when a first real film for the movies has been made that proves to be both a box office hit and a critical success, the first steps on the road to a Hollywood career have been taken.

The up-and-coming talent Keanu Reeves, 25, has done this with his very first attempt. He was born on September 2nd of 1964 in Beirut to Canadian parents, who soon moved to Hawaii. (Neither of Keanu's parents were Canadian. He grew up in Australia and Canada, not Hawaii. - Ani) It is there that he grew up and was christened. The odd first name Keanu is Hawaiian and means, roughly translated, "Cool breeze over the mountains". The search for a fitting screen name is not necessary in cases where one's own name is non-standard and memorable enough. His parents - his director father and designer mother - moved on to New York and Toronto, where Keanu obtained his first main part in a TV-series at 16.

He quickly made a name for himself with challenging movie hits. In German theatres, the year 1991 marks his breakthrough. In that year, two of his films came out at the same time, both of them hits in their own way. The dreaded career slump after the latest (scandalous) film "My Own Private Idaho" didn't happen; the young new star received new offers for parts.

What is is that makes Keanu Reeves so interesting to both directors and the audience? Is it his small Asian eyes that are a dead giveaway of his father's heritage, or is it his sensually sculpted lips that he purses together with such expression? His appeal must be partly the fact that he exudes a certain tranquility onscreen. Okay, he may lose it at times, but for the most part he is even-tempered and cool, without seeming arrogant or even bored in the process. But it goes without saying that there is something else going on as well. Being 1.80 metres tall and weighing 70 kilos, his appearance is just average. But when it comes down to it, you can tell that Hollywood requires its up and coming actors to be physically fit: Keanu is in top form. He sprints, jumps and surfs like an athlete. In "Point Break", Keanu plays a young FBI-agent from the countryside who moves to L.A. for his job. The director, Kathryn Bigelow, says about Keanu: "In my opinion, Keanu was perfect to play Johnny Utah - he is intelligent, charming and acts with his body. The way he chooses his roles is extraordinary. He dominates the screen, and instinctively knows how to wow the audience."

He disposed with the bias that was a consequence of him being a young and aspiring actor playing the part of a prostitute - and pulled that off convincingly. Something like that simply doesn't go with the 'official' Hollywood creed. In the end, a small independent studio produced the movie, because the bigger ones didn't want to tarnish their reputations with it. This in spite of the fact that Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman" also made love for money, in fact a lot of money, and nobody blamed her for it. The difference probably being, that that was about a harlot-laden fairytale with happy end. In "My Own Private Idaho" on the other hand, things take a far graver turn, and in the end only hopelessness remains.

In order for Keanu to portray the main character in this movie, Gus van Sant demanded a lot from him. This time, it wasn't enough to learn how to surf, like the young star did for "Point Break". Instead, he had to dig deep. It must be said, though, that Keanu passed the test. Since Keanu's agent in Hollywood feared for Keanu's reputation and further career, Gus van Sant had to persuade him to let Keanu act in his new movie. Having signed on, Keanu sunk his teeth into the street hustler milieu in Portland, Idaho. He had to study exactly how to act in this business, and what customs and rites were used. On one occasion, Keanu was taken out of the car of a john only after the two had already settled on a price: they really tried for authenticity.

But Keanu Reeves had nothing to lose, as he simply portrays in "My Own Private Idaho" a young man from a good family who has sex with men for money, but who is straight himself. And it is also just in the movie that his hustling partner Mike, played by River Phoenix, suffers through his unreciprocated love for him. He too is in real life strictly a ladies' man; something part of the fandom will gladly take to heart, thinking, "Thank God that he's not gay!".

Keanu Reeves, on the other hand, always gets to fall in love with beautiful women in his films. Like in his first big movie for the cinema, "Dangerous Liaisons", where he plays an innocent dandy entwined in a morally corrupt society of nobles. In this part, he plays Glenn Close's boy toy. The same goes for the thriller "Point Break". Here, while looking for a bank robber, Keanu's character comes across his girlfriend instead and quickly falls in love with her. And again in his latest flick, where Keanu Reeves together with his young Italian lady love finds a way back to a middle-class existence by putting a complete end to his life on the streets. His friend Mike, who has fallen in love with him, gets left behind. As written above, just in the film though.

After filming ended, River Phoenix and Keanu got together to indulge in their big passion: both are bass guitar freaks well-versed in their art. The joint jam sessions were for the two young men a way to wind down after the gruelling shoot.

In the future, Keanu Reeves can be seen in a completely different part: Francis Coppola is filming a new version of the Dracula saga as we speak.

The rococo dandy, FBI agent and street hustler definitely seems to be up for interesting parts. Maybe what he himself has said, when he talked about his role as FBI-sleuth, can be seen as telling: "At the beginning of the film Johnny Utah is quite cocky, like an immature boy who isn't sure if he can ever be happy. He has always liked living on the edge. It is through his relationship with Bodhi, played by Patrick Swayze, that he gains a lot of insight about himself. He is seduced by the darkness." Add Dracula to that: Keanu Reeves soon as bloodsucking Prince of Darkness? Let's wait and see.

Noch ein neuer, netter Kerl made by Hollywood: Keanu Reeves. Er hat mit einer spektakulären Filmrolle als Strichjunge für viel Aufsehen gesorgt. Fast hätte das seiner Karriere geschadet, die so vielversprechend begann. Aber Ruhm verdient man sich nicht immer durch konformes Verhalten!

Hollywood scheint immer noch der Platz auf der Welt zu sein, von wo gutaussehende Männer mit Ausstrahlung wie vom Fließband ausgespuckt auf die Leinwand kommen. Daran haben vergangene Filmkrisenzeiten und das Gerede von der Übermacht des Fernsehens nichts ändern können.

Im Gegenteil: Viele der neuen Jungstars kommen vom TV, hatten dort ihre erste Chance, dem Publikum und den Studio-Bossen Kostproben ihres Könnens zu liefern. Und wenn dann erst einmal ein richtiger Kinofilm abgedreht ist, der bei den Kritikern und an der Kasse gut ankommt, ist meistens der erste Schritt zu einer Hollywood-Karriere getan.

Dem Nachwuchstalent Keanu Reeves, 25, ist dies auf Anhieb gelungen. Geboren wurde er am zweiten Tag im August 1966 in Beirut als Sohn kanadischer Eltern, die es dann auf das tropische Hawaii zog. Hier wuchs er auf und hier wurde er getauft. Der merkwürdig klingende Vorname Keanu ist hawaiianisch und bedeutet so viel wie "Kühler Wind aus den Bergen". Die Suche nach einem passenden Künstlernamen erübrigt sich in einem solchen Fall, wenn der eigene Name ausgefallen und einprägsam genug ist. Seine Eltern, der Vater ist Regisseur, die Mutter Designerin, gingen weiter nach New York und Toronto, wo Keanu mit 16 seine erste Hauptrolle in einer Fernsehserie erhielt.

Durch anspruchsvolle Kinohits hat er sich schnell einen Namen bei den Zuschauern gemacht. In den deutschen Filmtheatern dürfte das Jahr 1991 für seinen Durchbruch stehen. In diesem Jahr kamen gleich zwei Filme mit ihm in die Kinos, die jeweils auf ihre ganz spezielle Art zu Hits wurden.

Doch der befürchtete Karriere-Knick nach dem letzten (Skandal-)Film 'My Private Idaho' blieb aus, neue Angebote für weitere Filmrollen flatterten dem Jungstar ins Haus.

Was macht Keanu Reeves so interessant bei Regisseuren und Publikum? Sind es nur seine asiatisch-schräggestellten, schmalen Augen, die die chinesische Herkunft seines Vaters nicht verleugnen lassen, oder seine sinnlich-geschwungenen Lippen, die er so ausdrucksvoll aufeinander ruhen lassen kann?

Seine Attraktivität liegt wohl unter anderem in der Ruhe, die er auch auf der Leinwand ausstrahlt. Gut, er kann auch mal ausflippen, aber im Grunde bleibt er gelassen-cool, ohne dadurch arrogant oder gar langweilig zu wirken. Und selbstverständlich zählt auch noch anderes. Mit einer Größe von einem Meter und achzig Zentimetern und einem Gewicht von 70 Kilo ist Keanu eher absoluter Durchschnitt. Aber, wenn's darauf ankommt, merkt man, daß Hollywood bei seinen Nachwuchs-Stars auch allergrößten Wert auf körperliche Fitness legt: Keanu ist in Topform. Er sprintet, springt und surft wie ein Leichtathlet.

Die Regisseurin des Films 'Gefährliche Brandung', Kathryn Bigelow, sagt über Kenau, der in diesem Film einen jungen FBI-Agenten vom Lande spielt, den sein Job nach L.A. verschlagen hat: "Ich fand, daß Keanu perfekt war, um Johnny Utah zu spielen - er ist intelligent, charmant und spielt sehr körperbetont. Seine Rollenwahl ist außerordentlich. Er beherrscht die Leinwand und er versteht es instinktiv, das Publikum in die Tasche zu stecken."

In die Tasche gesteckt hat er wohl auch die üblen Vorurteile, die einem jungen, aufstrebenden Schauspieler entgegenschlagen, der die Rolle eines Strichers annimmt - und sie dann auch noch überzeugend bringt. So was paßt einfach gar nicht ins 'offizielle' Studiocredo Hollywoods. Die Produktion des Films wurde denn auch von einem kleineren, unabhängigen Studio übernommen, die 'Großen' wollten sich nicht damit beflecken.

Obwohl ja Julia Roberts in 'Pretty Woman' ebenfalls Liebe für Geld, und zwar viel Geld gemacht hat und niemand ihr das ernstlich übel nahm. Der Unterschied liegt wohl auch darin, daß es sich dabei um ein Dirnen-Märchen mit Happy-End handelte. In 'Private Idaho' hingegen nehmen die Dinge ihren tragischen Verlauf, am Ende des Films bleibt nur tiefe Hoffnungslosigkeit.

Für die Hauptrollenbesetzung eben dieses Filmes verlangte Regisseur Gus van Sant viel von Keanu. Dieses Mal reichte es nicht, beispielsweise die Kunst des Surfens, die der Jungstar in dem Film 'Gefährliche Brandung' darbot, perfekt zu erlernen. Dieses Mal ging es an die Substanz.

So viel steht allerdings fest: Keanu hat die Feuerprobe bestanden.

Nachdem Gus den Agenten von Kenau Reeves in Hollywood dazu überredet hatte, ihn in seinem neuen Film mitwirken zu lassen, der Mann hatte Angst um den guten Ruf und die weitere Karrierekurve seines Schützlings, mußte sich Keanu life ins Stricher-Milieu von Portland, Idaho begeben. So sollte er genauestens einstudieren, wie man sich in diesem Geschäft verhält, welche Riten und Bräuche dort herrschen. Das Bemühen um Authentizität ging sogar so weit, daß man ihn einmal erst dann aus dem Wagen eines Freiers holte, als die zwei den Preis schon ausgemacht hatten.

Aber Keanu Reeves hat nichts zu befürchten, auch in 'My Private Idaho' stellt er lediglich einen jungen Mann aus gutem Hause dar, der zwar für Geld mit anderen Männern Sex macht, selbst jedoch nur auf Frauen kann. Und ebenfalls nur im Film leidet sein Strich-Kollege und Partner Mike, gespielt von River Phoenix, an seiner unerwiderten Liebe zu ihm. Im echten Leben ist auch er nur für das weibliche Geschlecht zu erwärmen, ein Teil der Fan-Gemeinde wird's mit Beruhigung zur Kenntnis nehmen nach dem Motto: 'Gott sei Dank, daß er nicht schwul ist!'

Keanu Reeves darf sich dafür in seinen Filmen immer in eine schöne Frau verlieben. So in dem ersten großen Kinofilm 'Gefährliche Liebschaften', in dem er einen unschuldigen Dandy inmitten einer total verkommenen, unmoralischen Adelsgesellschaft darstellt. Er mimt in dieser Rolle den Lustknaben von Glenn Close.

So auch im Thriller 'Gefährliche Brandung', wo er bei seinen Recherchen auf der Suche nach einem Serienbankräuber ausgerechnet auf dessen Freundin trifft und sich ziemlich schnell in sie verliebt. Nicht anders auch im jüngsten Streifen aus dem Strichjungen-Milieu, in dem Keanu Reeves zusammen mit seiner Herzdame, einer jungen Italienerin, zurück ins bürgerliche Leben findet und einen Schlußstrich unter sein Leben auf der Straße zieht. Auf der Strecke bleibt dabei Freund Mike, der sich ihn verliebt hat. Wie bereits gesagt, nur im Film.

Nach den Drehterminen taten sich River Phoenix und Keanu zusammen, um ihrer großen Leidenschaft zu frönen. Beide sind Baßgitarren-Freaks, die ihre Kunst professionell beherrschen. Die gemeinsamen Jam-Sessions waren für die beiden jungen Männer eine Art Entspannungs-Therapie nach den anstrengenden Filmaufnahmen.

Demnächst wird Keanu Reeves in einer ganz anderen Rolle zu sehen sein: Francis Coppola dreht mit ihm derzeit an einem neuen Aufguß der Dracula-Story.

Dem Rokokko-Dandy, FBI-Agenten und Strichjungen Reeves scheint an interessanten Rollen durchaus gelegen zu sein. Da ist das, was er selbst über seine Rolle als FBI-Schnüffler in 'Gefährliche Brandung' sagte, vielleicht aufschlußreich: "Zu Beginn des Films benimmt sich Johnny Utah sehr großspurig, wie ein unreifer Junge, der nicht sicher ist, ob er jemals glücklich sein kann. Hart am Abgrund zu leben hat ihm schon immer Spaß gemacht. Aber durch seine Beziehung zu Bodhi, gespielt von Patrick Swayze, seinem Gegenspieler in diesem Film, erfährt er eine Menge über sich selbst. Er wird von der Dunkelheit verführt."

Dazu Stichwort Dracula: Keanu Reeves bald als blutsaugender Fürst der Finsternis? Mal abwarten.
