"One day you're a star, the next cow's shit!"

While there's been no news for a while about Keanu Reeves, have no fear, for soon he'll be back with no less than four movies. After his poor attempt at an English accent in 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' (out on video this month), Keanu not only acts in the classic Shakespeare comedy "Much Ado About Nothing", but can also be seen as a hideous mutant, a cowboy and a zen Buddhist. All that within one year!

Keanu, who turns 29 in September, has proven himself to be one of the most versatile actors of Hollywood. The audience loves his clumsy appearance and his undefinable, fairly stupefied facial expression in films like "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures", or the very different "Point Break". But Keanu, whose first name means 'cool breeze over the mountains', has a lot more to show for himself...

Your upcoming movies aren't exactly intended for a large public. Why is that?
Keanu: Every actor has to battle it out for himself. I am at the moment sort of in between parts: on the one hand I know that I can do something as breezy as Point Break, on the other hand I'm sure of the fact that I can do more serious stuff like My Own Private Idaho. I want to prove myself as an actor, which is the reason why I made it my goal last year to get mature parts in serious films. Those films don't have to become box office hits, either. My newest flick, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, is from the same director as My Own Private Idaho, Gus van Sant. It's fantastic to work with a guy like Gus, he's so driven. Just like me, he's completely obsessed by film. In Cowgirls I play a cowboy who ends up as Uma Thurman's victim. She is the hitchhiker with an unsatiable lust for sex! Interesting, no? By the way, I am surrounded by beautiful women in that movie, because Lorraine Bracco and Rain Phoenix are in it as well. So far, I've worked with Leaf, River and now Rain, so pretty much the entire Phoenix family. Scary stuff!

Tell us a little bit about your part in that new Shakespeare film?
Keanu: To shoot Much Ado About Nothing I had to go to Tuscany in Italy. The temperature was 40 degrees in the shade, and we all had to wear 17th century costumes. I thought I was gonna die in that monkey suit. The fact that I got to play with such greatnesses as Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington and Michael Keaton definitely made up for that. Besides, I love Shakespeare. The theatre was my first love. I play in Much Ado About Nothing a godforsaken scumbag, Don John, who is madly jealous of his halfbrother, played by Denzel Washington. I have alway wanted to play an unmentionable scoundrel, somebody who only thinks in terms of death, hell, sin and damnation.

Het is een tijdje stil geweest rond Keanu Reeves, maar wees niet bang, binnenkort is hij terug met maar liefst vier films. Na zijn erbarmelijke poging tot Engels accent in 'Bram Stoker's Dracula, (deze maand uit op video), speelt Keanu niet alleen in de klassieke Shakespeare-komedie 'Much Ado About Nothing', maar zullen we hem ook kunnen aanschouwen als een foeilelijke mutant een cowboy en een Zen-Boeddhist En dat allemaal binnen één jaar!

Keanu (hij wordt in september 29 jaar) heeft bewezen één van de meest veelzijdige akteurs van Hollywood te zijn. Het publiek is dol op zijn klungelige verschijning en zijn wazige, nogal suffige gelaatsuitdrukking in films als Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures, of zijn haaks daarop staande macho-uitstraling in Point Break. Maar Keanu, wiens voornaam 'koele bries over de bergen' betekent, heeft nog veel meer in zijn mars...

Je komende films zijn nou niet bepaald voor een groot publiek bedoeld. Waarom is dat?
Keanu: 'Iedere akteur heeft zo zijn eigen gevecht te leveren. Ik zit momenteel als jonge akteur in een soort overgangsfase: aan de ene kant weet ik van mezelf dat ik iets luchtigs als Point Break aankan, maar ik weet ook dat ik rijp ben voor het serieuzere werk zoals My Own Private Idaho. Ik wil mezelf bewijzen als akteur en vandaar dat ik mij afgelopen jaar tot doel stelde volwassen rollen in serieuze films te bemachtigen. En dat hoeven dus niet meteen kassuccessen te worden. Mijn nieuwste film Even Cowgirls Get The Blues is van dezelfde regisseur als My Own Private Idaho, Gus Van Sant. Het is geweldig met een figuur als Gus te werken, want hij is zo ontzettend gedreven. Hij is net als ik volkomen geobsedeerd door film. In Cowgirls speel ik een cowboy die het slachtoffer wordt van Uma Thurman. Zij is een liftster met een onverzadigbare honger naar sex! Interessant nietwaar? Ik wordt in die film overigens omringd door mooie vrouwen, want Lorraine Bracco en Rain Phoenix spelen er ook in mee. Ik heb nu gewerkt met Leaf, River en nu Rain. Da's dus zo'n beetje de hele Phoenix-familie. Beangstigend hoor!'

Vertel eens wat over je rol in die nieuwe Shakespeare-film?
Keanu: 'Voor de opnames voor Much Ado About Nothing moest ik afgelopen zomer naar Toscanië in Italië. Het was daar 40 graden in de schaduw en we moesten allemaal van die 17e-eeuwse kostuums dragen. Ik dacht dat ik doodging in dat apepakkie. Het feit dat ik met grootheden als Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington en Michael Keaton mocht spelen, maakte echter veel goed. Bovendien ben ik dol op Shakespeare. Het theater was mijn eerste grote liefde. Ik speel in Much Ado About Nothing een van God verlaten ploert, Don John, die stinkend jaloers is op zijn halfbroer, gespeeld door Denzel Washington. Ik heb altijd al eens een ongelooflijke schoft willen spelen, iemand die alleen maar denkt in termen van dood, hel, zonde en verdoemenis.'
