Keanu, a name of Hawaiian origin that means "cool breeze over the mountains", although in reality it was more than a cool breeze; more like a hurricane this actor, shy Hollywood star, awoke in San Sebastian at the presentation of his last movie. In spite of all of this, he refuses to be considered and classified as a sex symbol of the younger generations.

After having delighted us with his basic knowledge of the Spanish language telling us "magnificent man", and accusing a long trip and lack of sleep for his tiredness, he went on to answer a few questions in a brief and concise manner.

When you see one of your films do you appreciate your evolution as an actor?
For me it is a very positive experience to see how I have evolved in my different roles and to analyze later, as I gain more experience, how I could have interpreted that same role, perhaps differently.

Do you always enjoy your portrayals when you see them on the big screen?
No. The truth is I don't always like what I see.

Did you find it difficult to face this role, a romantic role in the style of Gary Cooper, a booking totally different to your previous interpretations and with the tremendously Latin character in which the story develops?
I think the most interesting part about my role in this film consists of the war experience; this is what posed to be most difficult. To save those difficulties I got in touch with a Marine that had personally lived these experiences and was kind enough to share them with me. I also read the news from that era to search for impressions from people who lived these war experiences; among them I found testimonies of people that were changed so substantially by the war and that understood how valuable life is. I also had to work on the accent a bit to get an Illinois accent and give my character more realism.

You are an actor that has portrayed roles in many cinematic styles, comedies, dramas, movies like "My Own Private Idaho", worked with Bertolucci… Is this because you like change or because you take advantage of offers without a second thought?
I would have to say a bit of both. I think it is really fortunate to be able to change genres and I hope to be able to continue to work in different genres and roles in the future.

How do you find you rank in the North American movie industry after having worked with a film director like Bertolucci in "Little Buddha" and then going on to film a movie like "Speed"?
I think that as an actor it is very positive to have different experiences and versatility in the roles one plays.

After the great success of "Speed" you have become a worldwide star
The truth is that the movie "Speed" has given my career lots of popularity.

How do you feel about being so popular and being considered a sex symbol?
Well, I don't consider myself a sex symbol. I really don't know what a sex symbol is. My thing is to be an actor and enjoy it. I think it is amusing to a certain point but that changes when I go to the store. I am delighted that there are people that enjoy my work.

What is your opinion about the current situation in North American film making with its excesses in violence and sex?
The truth is that lately it seems that if there is not at least one police gun then it is not a Hollywood movie. But I do think that this also has an interesting side. My criterion is to not get involved in a project that is not worthwhile, a movie with cops and guns does not have to be bad per se. Personally I like action and I like to both see and participate in movies whose ambition is to entertain.

Why are you an actor?
What else could I be? I like it. I never wanted to be anything else since I stopped playing with toys. At that time, like everyone else, I had a lot of dreams.

As friend and great connoisseur of the now departed River Phoenix, do you think that what happened to him was a consequence of rapid success?
No, he had a good handle on his success and knew what was happening.

How do you welcome the rumors about your private life?
The majority of times I do not have knowledge of these rumors. My friends call me and tell me "Hey, I read you got married". "Yeah, a secret wedding with David Geffen". It doesn't affect me much. I don't think it is anything personal against me.

You like classic authors like Shakespeare, Dostojevski. How did you feel about "Much Ado About Nothing"?
It was a very positive experience but they cut my character's role too much.

Do you know anything about the industry of film in Spain?
Not really. Of course I have seen movies but nothing else.

What have you learned about the representation of the Latin culture by your film colleagues and even the director?
I have never really thought about it in terms of culture. I have dealt with people but I have never confronted a culture. Perhaps the most I have received from this culture has been its music.

Besides being an actor you also have a rock & roll band.
Yes, I do have a band, "Dogstar", in which I play bass but do not sing. I do it for fun. It's something that awards me a really great time. I am very pleased with my friends. When we return we will have two concerts here.

Are you as shy as they say?
Sometimes.

Keanu, nombre de origen hawaiano significa "brisa fresca sobre las montañas" aunque realmente fue algo más que una brisa fresca el huracán que este actor, tímida estrella de Hollywood, despertó en San Sebastián en la presentación de su última película. A pesar de esto él mismo se resiste a ser considerado y calificado como sex-symbol de las más jóvenes generaciones.

Tras deleitamos con sus básicos conocimientos de español diciéndonos "Hombre magnífico", y acusando el cansancio del largo viaje y la falta. de sueño, pasó a contestarnos de forma breve y escueta algunas preguntas:

Cuando ves una película tuya aprecias tu evolución como actor?
Para mí es una experiencia muy positiva ver como evoluciono en mis diferentes actuaciones y analizar después, según voy adquiriendo experiencia, cómo podría haber interpretado ese mismo papel.

Te gustas siempre cuando ves en la pantalla tus actuaciones?
No, la verdad es que no siempre me gusta lo que veo.

Encontraste muchas dificultades para enfrentarte a tu papel, un papel romántico a lo Gary Cooper en un registro totalmente diferente a tus interpretaciones anteriores y el carácter tremendamente latino en el que se desenvuelve la historia?
Lo más interesante de mi papel en esta película creo que lo constituye la experiencia de la guerra; esto fue lo que supuso mayores dificultades. Para salvar estas dificultades me puse en contacto con un marine que había vivido personalmente estas experiencias y las compartió conmigo. También leí la prensa de la época para buscar impresiones de personas que hubieran vivido experiencias de guerra; entre ellas encontré testimonios de personas a las que la guerra había cambiado de forma sustancial y les había hecho comprender lo valiosa que es la vida. También tuve que trabajar un poco el acento para conseguir un acento de Illinois y dar mayor realismo a mi personaje.

Eras un actor que ha representado una gran variedad de estilos comedia, drama, películas corno "Mi Idaho privado", o trabajar con Bertolucci... Esto as porque te gusta cambiar o porque aprovechas las ofertas qua recibes sin más?
Podría afirmar que un poco de ambas, creo que es una suerte poder cambiar de género y espero poder seguir en un futuro trabajando en diferentes estilos y papeles.

Cómo te encuentras en la industria del cine norteamericano tras pasar de trabajar con un cineasta tan europeo como Bertolucci an "El pequeño Buda" a realizar una película como "Speed"?
Creo que como actor tener experiencias diferentes y versatilidad en los papeles es muy positivo.

Tras el gran éxito de Speed te has convertido en una estrella del cine mundial...
Sí la verdad es que la película de Speed ha aportado una gran popularidad a mi carrera.

Cómo te sientes entre toda esa popularidad, siendo considerado como un sex-symbol?
Bueno, yo no me considero un sex-symbol, realmente no sé que es un sex-symbol. Lo mío es ser actor y quiero disfrutar de ello. Me parece divertido hasta cierto punto pero esto no me sucede cuando voy a comprar a la charcutería. Estoy encantadísimo de que haya gente a la que le guste mi trabajo.

Cuál es tu opinión sobre la situación actual del cine norteamericano, su exceso de violencia y sexo?
La verdad es que últimamente parece que si no hay una pistola de un policía no se trata de una película de Hollywood. Pero creo que esto también tiene un lado interesante. Mi criterio es no involucrarme en un proyecto que no merezca la pena, una película con policías y pistolas no tiene porqué ser mala en sí. A mí personalmente me gusta la acción y me gusta ver y participar en películas cuya ambición es entretener.

Por qué eres actor?
Qué otra cosa podría ser? Me gusta, nunca he deseado ser otra cosa desde que dejé de jugar con los juguetes. En aquella época, como todo el mundo, tenía muchos sueños.

Como amigo y gran conocedor del desaparecido River Phoenix, crees que lo que le sucedió fue a consecuencia del éxito rápido?
No, realmente él había asumido muy bien su éxito y sabía lo que estaba pasando.

Cómo recibes los rumores que circulan sobre tu vida privada?
La mayoría de las veces yo no tengo noticia alguna de estos rumores. Mis amigos me llaman y me dicen "Hey, he leído que te has casado" "Sí, una boda secreta con David Geffen". No me afecta demasiado no creo que haya nada personal contra mí.

Te gustan los autores clásicos como Shakespeare, Dovtoieski. Cómo te sentiste en "Mucho ruido y pocas nueces"?
Fue una experiencia muy positiva pero cortaron mucho mi papel.

Sabes algo de la industria del cine española?
No realmente, por supuesto que he visto películas pero no más.

Qué has aprendido de la cultura latina representada por tus compañeros de rodaje y el mismo director?
La verdad es que nunca me lo he planteado en términos de cultura. He tratado con personas pero no me he enfrentado a ninguna cultura. Quizá lo que más he podido percibir de esta cultura ha sido su música.

Además de ser actor tienes un grupo de rock & roll...
Sí tengo un grupo; "Dogstar" en el que toco el bajo pero no canto. Lo hago por divertirme, es algo con lo que me lo paso muy bien, estoy muy a gusto con mis amigos. Ahora cuando vuelva tenemos dos conciertos.

Eres tan tímido como se dice?
Algunas veces
