Keanu, 'Matrix' Crew Wish Upon a Pig

by Ruthe Stein

The cast and crew of the "Matrix" sequel conducted a Buddhist ceremony in front of the California State Building in Oakland on their first day of filming Monday. Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne were among those chanting prayers as they rolled and lit rice paper to throw into a pyre. They all put their hands on a large knife and plunged it through a barbecued pig. All of this was meant to bring them luck on the shoot, which continues in the East Bay for 12 weeks before relocating in Australia. With grosses of almost $400 million on the first "Matrix," the ceremony may have been superfluous, but at least they got a hearty lunch out of it. .
