According to rumors, Square Pictures may have gotten work doing a short CG Matrix
by Paul Davidson
After finishing and releasing this summer's ho-hum computer-generated film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, what new projects do Square Pictures have on their plates? According to a short article at Ain't It Cool News, they may have been recruited by the Wachowski Brothers to work on a Matrix-related project.
An inside report has it that Square will produce a ten-minute computer-generated short film using techniques they mastered during their years-long work on Final Fantasy. The film is apparently intended to be a prequel to the upcoming Matrix Reloaded movie starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne. That means it would presumably fit in, storywise, between the original Matrix hit movie and the sequel, due in theaters in 2003.
Details are still scrambled as to what exactly this short prequel film is for. It may be a special Internet-only feature, in which case the Wachowskis are shelling out a lot of cash for an uncertain marketing venture. It may also be intended as a special feature on the Matrix Reloaded DVD when it comes out - but if it's a prequel, it makes more sense to show it before the second Matrix film comes out. At any rate, we'll keep an eye out on this one.
In other Matrix-related news, today's Variety is reporting that Larry and Andy Wachowski have been asking anime directors to provide episodes inspired by the Matrix films. The trade newspaper reports that "Matrix Anime is being planned for a late 2002 or early 2003 video release."
