Ten minutes with Keanu Reeves

(Translated from German by Anakin McFly with Google Translate. With thanks to LucaM, SaneSun and BlueGem for picking up errors.)

Keanu Reeves is punctual to the minute. Despite his stressful day, many interviewers are waiting for him, and he has only ten minutes for each of them. Even us.

Mr. Reeves, your management said we only have ten minutes. Ten minutes! That's incredibly short. What can you do in ten minutes? Ten minutes is just enough time to cook pasta...

That's right. You could cook noodles. (Hesitates) But I can't cook well. No, I'm a really bad cook. In ten minutes I could... I could make a toast. Ten minutes is enough to butter a toast. Or I could make a salad. Ten minutes is also enough to prepare a salad.

Let's keep to this ten-minute theme. What can you do in ten minutes? What do you do the first ten minutes every day?

Nothing special. I (thinks) I wake up ...

Are you someone who turns on the TV immediately after waking up and checks the latest news on your mobile phone?

No, definitely not. I wake up slowly, and then I try to remember what I was dreaming about. I wonder what the day will bring and what plans I have for the day. And then I go have a shower and stand in front of my closet and wonder what to wear. An ordinary start to the day. Nothing special.

And what do you do the last ten minutes every day?

I lie in my bed and recall the day's events. How it was, and did everything work the way I wanted it to? And then I start to think about the next day. What I have to do tomorrow... do I have any appointments? You know, I have a very, very great bed. It is wonderful to lie in, and it's a great place to think and reflect.

What do you do in the first ten minutes after arriving on a film set?

That depends on whether it's the first time on a new movie set, where I've just started working, or whether it's in the midst of filming a movie. If it's really the first time on a completely new movie set, then there are a lot of formalities, such as camera tests with the camera crew. And I must get to know them, of course, and say hello. When I arrive on a film set where I've already been working for the past few days, I'm just saying "Hi" to all the crew, clarifying what there is for me to do that day, and getting into makeup.

And if you go for a ten minutes break during filming, what do you do then? Read?

It depends. If we suddenly take a break in the middle of a scene, then I try to stay concentrated and focused. I think about my role, I look at the script again. I don't let myself be distracted or disturbed by anything.

Imagine: You have ten minutes with someone whom you've always wanted to meet and speak to. Undisturbed, all alone in a room. Who would that be?

Oh. (Thinks) Good question. Tough question. I don't know. I think it would depend on the room (laughs). No, I'd have to think about it too much to give you an answer. And now we have only four minutes left.

Oh, you're right! Then let's quickly continue. Next question: What were the most exciting ten minutes in your life?

Mhm. (Thinks) Maybe the ten minutes of my birth. Yes, that was very exciting. I was in water ...

Wait, you remember the ten minutes of your birth?

Not really, just in my imagination. (Laughs)

What about, for example, the minutes in 2005 when you got your star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood?

Oh, yes. Those minutes were very exciting and above all very, very special. That was a very special day for me and a great honor. I was especially very happy that I could share this day with my family and my best friend.

Continue this sentence: Sometimes I wish I just had ten minutes to...

Oh, God. (Thinks) I often wish for a bit of time - for different things. But ten minutes is definitely not enough for any of that! (Laughs) If we could change the question and I could wish for more than ten minutes - then I could give you my list of the many things for which I would like to have time...

But the time, Mr. Reeves! Our ten minutes are almost done. I told you that, it's incredibly short. So: One more question, about the film "Henry's Crime", which is now out on DVD. In the film, Henry - who you play - is involved in a bank robbery. Are ten minutes enough to rob a bank?

Ten minutes for a bank robbery? Hmm, if the bank staff is quick and all the money is quickly packed into a bag and if everything is planned well - yes, I think that's doable.

In its original German:

Zehn Minuten! Das ist unheimlich kurz. Was kann man schon in zehn Minuten machen?

Nudeln könnte man kochen.

Was machen Sie die ersten zehn Minuten jeden Tag?

Nichts Besonderes.

I feel the translation is spot on. And very clever of the interviewer to be in the moment and go with the 10 minute concept. Thumbs up!

Translation...hmmm (2011-11-10 11:01:00)
Is it possible that "You have ten minutes with someone who wanted to meet you and who has always wanted to speak to you." has been mistranslated?

It would make more sense if he was being asked about someone HE always wanted to meet and speak to. (My guess is that Keanu has had more then enough of being stuck with people who idolize him.)

What do you think?

I do love the 10-minute theme; that made it all very playful.

Well done! (2011-11-10 13:13:23)
Fun interview! I like that it went on the road less traveled, interview-wise. :-)

BlueGem : i was thinking the same , that if the question was the way as u put it , it would be more logical , and we could have an answer from Keanu , for sure ..

Good job on Translating this , its a fun read :)

Blue Gem - actually, after checking with another translation tool (http://translation2.paralink.com/) it seems you are right; it should be a question about who he always wanted to meet and speak to...

GuestThe art of saying nothing with grace & smile. (2011-11-12 19:41:38)
Reeves don't say anything in this interview as usual. :))

it's a problem of percetion, my dear guest, where you see nothing I see a lot of things...percetion...and capacity of reading sentences! :)
Giladora
(2011-11-13 11:23:08)
I guess , what was the "guest" trying to say was , he doesn't throw out personal details , and dodge them , as he usually does , with an smile :D..
but true , the old fans , can read all those between the lines ... :)
gulbie
(2011-11-13 18:13:39)
if he wouldn't dodge the personal details questions I'll send him a doctor because he's surely sick... :D
true, the old fans can read many of those between the lines...
and I like the way he answers he's polite and sharp. I like exspecially the answer about the birth.
GuestYes Giladora, you got it. (2011-11-17 19:08:09)
The "guest" was trying to say , he doesn't throw out personal details , and dodge them , as he usually does , with an smile.

But don't you think old fans read too much between the lines? Don't you think the old fans read what they want to read and nothing more?

gulbie
No, I don't think (2011-11-17 21:09:20)
No, I don't think. because reading between the lines too much or what the old fans want to read is an irrational and unfair conduct. as far as I am concerned the old fans are not irrational and unfair people.

maybe they can see a coherent framework of ideas and thoughts even in his seemingly neutral answers, and in this case the last thing the old fans need is the manipulation of the same answers. :-)

as I wrote, it's a question of percetion. xoxo

Giladora
Dear Guest ! (2011-11-18 02:57:35)
yeah like Gulbie said , its the question of perception . i add the word "Time" to it.

"fans" are in love and "old fans" , love .

fans , mostly over-read , because simply they are at the peak of their obsession , I agree . but after a while (depends on the person) it's hard to deceive yourself and your eyes , for such a long time .. you see things more clearly , without any delusion. so it's up to you , if you leave or stay .

people who stay , become old fans .. and I believe , for them , the fake idol is broken , and they accept their favorite people as they are , they do not read too much to get their satisfaction , they read , they see , and they learn how to compromise . just like an old friendship , an old marriage .

you see , they "KNOW " :)

gulbie
Yeah Giladora... (2011-11-18 03:59:11)
you have perfectly described the situation...

I'm expecially agree about the old friendship... :)

LucaM
(2011-11-18 04:56:45)
What do old fans see? Into the head? Down into the heart? Do they see into me? Into us? Clearly or darkly? I hope they see clearly because I can't any longer see into myself. I see only murk. I hope for everyone's sake the old fans do better, because if the old fans see only darkly the way I do, then I'm cursed and cursed again.

;)

Giladora
Marriage vs friendship (2011-11-18 05:27:25)
that's why i chose the word "Marriage" as well LucaM ..LOL :D

Believe me I surely know what are you saying :D it's not about Keanu though , that's how i learned to compromise , and grow old with it . agree , its like a curse somehow.

ARYA
yes giladora (2011-11-19 07:22:23)
some of us are old fans. And the delusions are mostly gone.
