Werner Herzog Will Consider Directing Bill & Ted 3

B. Alan Orange

Way back in September of 2010, actor Keanu Reeves joked to MTV that he'd like to get acclaimed documentary and feature film director Werner Herzog behind the lens on the long awaited sequel Bill & Ted 3.

That seems like a long shot, for sure. But more surprising things have happened. And Werner is certainly an interesting choice to take on the further adventures of The Wyld Stallyns, especially now that they will be dealing with a mid-life existential crisis. Themes explored in a great deal of Werner Herzog's best work.

We haven't had a solid update on Bill & Ted 3 since April, when Alex Winter revealed that the script, by original Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure scribes Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, was completed. We chatted with Werner Herzog today in support of his most non-heinous documentary Into the Abyss: A Tale of Death, A Tale of Life, so we decided to see what he had to say about possibly directing Bill & Ted 3. Guess what? If the script is good, he'll do it!

Here is what he had to say about the possibility of directing Bill & Ted 3.

"I have not seen the first and the second (movie). So I do not know for sure. But, if it is a good screenplay, Yes! I am ready for all sorts of wild stuff."

Now, someone just needs to get the script into his hands. He has some free time coming up as he awaits financing on his next project. Bill & Ted 3 directed by Werner Herzog sounds like a masterpiece. Can you think of a better director for this long awaited sequel?

Bill & Ted 3 is in development and stars Alex Winter, Keanu Reeves.

Maybe not the right guy, especially because he's never seen B&T I and II.

Their quote is a little bit out of context. From the original it doesn't look like Werner Herzog is interested at all.

Okay. Last question. Keanu Reeves wants you to direct Bill & Ted 3. Any comment?

Werner Herzog: I don't understand that question, acoustically. Can you please repeat?

Keanu Reeves. He wants you to direct Bill & Ted. Is that something you would ever consider doing?

Werner Herzog: Who is that?!

Keanu Reeves is an American actor...

Werner Herzog: Oh. Keanu Reeves! Sorry. I do not understand you acoustically. This Keanu Reeves says what?

He wants you to direct his time travel comedy. A sequel to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Werner Herzog: I have not seen the first and the second. So I do not know. But, if it is a good screenplay, I am ready for all sorts of wild stuff.

Does comedy and time travel appeal to you as a director?

Werner Herzog: I have not seen these films. I cannot really comment.

GuestBill & Ted 3 = Very Bad Idea (2011-11-12 19:26:00)
It’s never too late to be who you might have been. – George Elliot

Reeves wanted to be an actor but he is a movie star. It isn't too late for him to become a real actor and do some stage work. Bill and Ted 3 is a very bad idea. Never go back nor look back into the past. He needs to move on with new challenges. IMHO

A 50 years old Ted , is a fun challenge ... and No , I'm not defending Keanu , or anything , i just think it is ..
50 years old Ted? (2011-11-16 00:28:59)
Actually, I don't think Keanu can play a 50 years old Ted unless they dye his hair grey and add artificial wrinkles.

That's the downside of being immortal, I guess.

haha (2011-11-16 10:54:50)
 hahaha .. true.. that's why i called it a fun challenge :D ..
GuestHerzog, Really? (2011-11-18 02:43:06)
Maybe the warped and lovely Bobcat “World’s Greatest Dad” Goldthwaite? And didn’t Bill and Ted have sons? They’d be the right age to pick up where the franchise left off; leaving both Mr. Reeves and the prolific and redoubtable Mr. Winter free to direct, or do stage work, or whatever else they wish. Oh well. Last nixie missive. Burma Shave.
Ambivalent on this one (2011-11-19 12:37:34)
Part of me really doesn't want to see Keanu revisit this character...the fish will have a field day. On the other hand, its another chance for him to give the "The Man" the finger, if you know what I mean. And just maybe it will be funnier then hell. I'd love to see Keanu be really funny...mostly he's so ironic that it just bends people's minds to try to really "get" his sense of humor. He loves to freak with people's minds.
hey, just an idea (2011-11-23 02:59:04)
maybe Bill and Ted 3 can look like this :
