Keanu Reeves prepares for lawyer role at Jefferson Parish Courthouse

by Paul Purpura

Preparing for his latest role as a criminal defense attorney in "The Whole Truth," a movie to be filmed in the New Orleans area in coming weeks, Keanu Reeves sought out some true-to-life courtroom drama Thursday. The actor spent several hours in the Jefferson Parish Courthouse in Gretna, observing the second-degree murder trial of a New Orleans man who is accused of a Kenner homicide.

In the film directed by Courtney Hunt, who also was at the Gretna courthouse, Reeves reportedly will play a lawyer who signs on to defend a teenager accused of killing his wealthy father. Reeves reportedly stepped into the role in recent months, after Daniel Craig backed out.

So Reeves sat quietly in the fifth-floor courtroom of 24th Judicial District Judge Glenn Ansardi and watched as witnesses testified in the morning. He returned in the afternoon to watch the prosecutors and the defense attorney give closing arguments.

At first, Ansardi didn't notice the celebrity sitting in his gallery. "I didn't even know he was here," Ansardi said in his chambers, shortly before closing arguments began.

Earlier in the day, however, Reeves had introduced himself to the public defender assigned to the case, Letita Parker-Davis. "He shook my hand, and that was it," Parker-Davis said during the lunch recess.

Word of the actor's presence spread quickly through the parish government complex. Ansardi's court became a magnet for people curious to see the movie star.

It's routine for lawyers to sit in on trials only to observe their colleagues at work. But the number of lawyers in Ansardi's court Thursday afternoon was unusually high. The trial in question, although involving a homicide, was not particularly high-profile in nature.

There was no apparent disruption in the trial, and jurors weren't seen stealing glances Reeves' way. It's unclear whether jurors even knew he was there.

Reeves appeared to take it all in stride. He graciously agreed to pose for photographs with anyone who asked, in the hallway outside the courtroom and in the adjacent parish government complex.

Assistant District Attorney Shannon Swaim was among the people who got a moment of his time. She had heard courthouse gossip about his role in the movie, but she didn't know whether he would play a prosecutor or defense attorney.

"I walked up to him and said, 'I'm a real prosecutor,'" Swaim said. "He said, 'Oh really?' And we took our picture and that was it. He was very nice."

What a waste. Who walks up to a gorgeous, wildly successful multi-millionaire and brags about HER job like it's something? There's a lot I'd say to Keanu if I ever had the chance, and none of it would be about me or my "accomplishments."

Get some perspective, woman.

Huh. I didn't see it as bragging, but just an introduction more meaningful than simply giving a name.

That first comment was me aka allhailkingjack; apparently I can't be logged in and post comments. Anyway, might be that all my years of working with lawyers have colored my thinking. In my experience, they really do tend to believe that 1) they are doing the Lord's work; and 2) they are the smartest and most accomplished people in any given room.

Everyone peppers him with questions; why can't someone talk to him about what they do since he is doing research anyway? I don't think it was bragging, more like making conversation.

Yes, the site didn't want me to post, despite being logged in - said I didn't fill out the anti-spam Capta [sic] So I reloaded and tried again.

Does anyone know which hotel Keanu is staying at in New Orleans while he films The Whole Truth?

 why do you ask?
GuestDear LucaM (2014-07-06 07:39:55)
I have a friend who lives in NOLA and she would like his autograph. Instead of hunting around for him I thought I would ask this community if anyone knew where he was. Only good intentions are behind my question.

However you want to spin my new obsession is fine with me. :) But Guest, I think you might be barking up the wrong tree with this crowd. "Academics" we may or may not be, but I'm reasonably sure there are no hotel stalkers in this corner of the fandom.

Aaannnd I still can't post comments under my username (allhailkingjack).

welllll. :| A while ago, Zachary Quinto came to my country to film a movie, and I figured out what hotel he was staying at, and then thought: nah, it's too hot. So I stayed home, though I twice tried and failed to stalk him at the movie set. But given favourable weather conditions and the prospect of Keanu... I can't say I wouldn't stake out his hotel for hours. Because I probably would. :| But I'd probably keep my distance and not bother him once I've visually confirmed his existence.

P.S. I think I've fixed the thing that keeps logging people out. At least, I could post this comment!

To each her own. :)

I don't know if it's that I kept being logged out. When I post a comment while logged in, it doesn't give me the option of entering the anti-spam thing and so doesn't accept my comment. Then it logs me out and I have to post as a guest to get the comment to go through.

I still have no idea what the problem is with the comment thing (something was automatically logging people out whenever they posted a comment, so they got read as guests and thus required the captcha), but I did a convoluted work around so it should work now! At least until I have the time to really tear the code apart and solve the mystery.

It would be really nice if a couple of the members would be nicer to the guests. If you don't agree with that person's ideas, just say so without being rude. Anakin is trying to have a nice atmosphere here, a welcoming one, and this kind of thing happens annoyingly often. --Another guest who has been treated that way before

There shouldn't be any more problems with being randomly logged out. Drop me an email if there are any more issues.

And play nice, people. Give others the benefit of the doubt - it's often hard to read tone online, plus we're a pretty international bunch, so there may also be language or cultural differences that get in the mix.

Nice Monty Python reference 'guest' (2014-07-08 02:42:39)
I try to put myself in someone else's position and frankly ze hotel is home base when away, isn't it? It is for me. I wouldnt want to have ppl disrupt the hotel's day to day just because I was staying there. That's how I see it. Nothing personal to anyone asking the question. The Crescent City is spread out but the street cars can get you just about anywhere one needs to go while there. Except the FQ, they don't run through it....I don't think but they are cheap and the windows are open so it isn't stuffy like a bus.

Please listen to what Anakin said in the Pippa thread. Assume the best about people and stop looking for a fight. We all need to try to get along in this divisive world, not argue with someone that we know we have at least one big thing in common with. Spread the love, not the animosity. I love the way you think, Anakin!

Another thing I love... (2014-07-20 05:01:42)
...is that KR showed respect for the venue by dressing appropriately. Parties to a case are well advised to dress to the nines, but observers can wear anything they want. He could've walked in looking like a hobo, and I think it's nice he chose not to, whether for character reasons or not.

Amy CK FooHomework before playing the role (2016-07-27 03:03:30)
Keanu is a real professional actor, some may call him a star, but from the above he is beyond a 'star'...

Salute to a person who devotes and takes his career seriously, always checks out the facts and conditions and does the homework personally before playing the role! Salute to an actor who 'immerges' & wants to play the role not only well, to portray if not a real one in life, but at least to the nearest real one!

Bravo!I like his style even more than before!
