Another thing about the script - for ARYA :-) -, somebody writes on IMDb
(http://www.imsdb.com/Movie%20Scripts/Speed%20Script.html):

"This was actually mostly written by Joss Whedon. Even Graham Yost stated that Whedon wrote 95% of the dialogue. Also, if you read the script, you can tell that Harry is the bus bomber in the original draft. Look at the callbacks to the gold retirement watch and the pop quiz scenarios."

Harry as the bad guy??? What an idea.

Harry as the bad guy??? What an idea.

actually... I can see it. the bitter, disillusioned cop partnered with innocent, gung-ho Jack who believes in the greater good and shoots the hostage? It would have been a different film, but I guess it could have worked.

I liked Harry...and Jack needed a helping hand from somebody like him. But I would read that draft anyway :-)

What a great find! Thank you Trinity!

I think Joss Whedon speaks for all of us, Keanu is an anomaly in Hollywood and a great one, he is in his own league, too sad if some people doesn't get him or appreciate his dedication to his craft...

And now folks, it must be the 20th anniversary of Speed cuz they keep saying it on the tv and playing the movie a lot.
BTW rereading this thread was fun.

http://www.indystar.com/story/entertainment/arts/2014/03/25/q-artistry-speed-musical/6835883/

Indy's newest musical is based on the high-octane thriller that put Sandra Bullock on the map.

It's the perfect recipe for a thriller: a bomb squad specialist is tasked by a psychotic extortionist with keeping a Los Angeles city bus traveling over 50 mph, or it will explode.

But is it the perfect recipe for a musical?

Local playwright Paige Scott sure thought so, and after knocking the idea around for a few years, she decided to adapt the 1994 film "Speed," starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, into a musical parody. The plot follows the film version fairly closely, with only a few deviations from the original script.

The real parody is found in the songs, with titles like "My Life's the Bomb," "There's a Bomb on a Bus," "Shoot the Hostage," "Rebellion on the Bus" and "I Think I Might Fall in Love with You Today."

"The songs in this show are amazing," said Dave Ruark, who plays Dennis Hopper's (the psychotic extortionist) character in the film. "It's such a respectful treatment of the source material."

Logan Moore and Carrie Morgan take on the roles of Reeves and Bullock's characters. The two watched the film repeatedly to try and learn the mannerisms of the blockbuster duo.

"It's interesting to play the high-stakes along with the comedy and the love scenes," said Moore. "It's a ride, it really is."

No...I surely thought it was a joke. That's just horrifying, and not in a good way.

Wasnt someone just begging for musicals lately, too?! *snort* cameo appearance possible?

Poll.

I heard on the radio today a bizarre story about some guy trying to collect all the copies of Speed that still exist on VHS. Whatever floats your boat I suppose. But he won't succeed. Because I own two copies on VHS and I am not giving them up.

Also,in case you are wondering, yes I still have a VCR, yes it still works, and yes I use it.

I have a VHS copy too, and am loath to part with it even though our VCR broke years ago. Thank God I finally ordered this on Blu-Ray. Haven't watched it in a while and am really looking forward to seeing it again.

But I'm not too happy about the fact that the 20th anniversary of Speed means I'm almost 40. Which means I already look older than Keanu.

Ugh, somebody needs to blow up the gender train. Jack and Annie both subverted and fulfilled gender stereotypes. That's what made them real characters. It's called being human, and it's what renders those categories utterly meaningless.

I agree completely. It's way beyond stereotypes. It's unfortunate to see yet another grudgingly "flattering" article, though of course useful as a point of reference for that sort of thing.

Also from the HuffPost article by Alex Pappedemas:

"Reeves wasn’t, so he was free to wander off for most of the next half-decade, ping-ponging from willful weirdness (Johnny Mnemonic) to crud without the courage of its convictions (The Devil’s Advocate)."

If someone wants to criticize The Devil's Advocate, a great film in my opinion, it would be wise to find something other than a lack of conviction. Every actor in the film, and certainly Taylor Hackford, and everyone else involved, showed enormous conviction in what they're doing. It's a stupid, ridiculous and innaccurate criticism.

Yeah, I was really surprised to read that about DA, as it's long been a favorite of mine for the very reason you mention. Everybody goes balls to the wall and embraces the crazy and the result is some really great performances, including from Keanu himself.
