This post makes me happy. :D

I just sort of stare at him now, unable to trace how Jack Traven can be Thomas Anderson can be Conor O'Neil can be John Constantine can be Tom Ludlow.

yessss.

I never watched the movie!

Wait, did I violate a no-spoiler rule? I saw them in other movie threads & thought it was fine.

This post makes me happy. :D

I live to serve.

The other thing that's really starting to get me is what an incredibly intimidating physical presence he can be. I don't really think of Neo, Nelson, or Constantine as big, hulking dudes but then here come Conor and Ludlow looking like bouncers and it's just...whoa, for lack of a better word.

If there was a no-spoiler rule, it still wouldn't apply to 13 years old movies.

oh, and that post made me happy, too ;) :D

a chameleon is a chameleon is a chameleon ;)

I think one of his most hulking roles is in The Gift.

Kind of strange that you mentioned seeing that movie, but not remembering Keanu in it.

I first saw it years ago when I wasn't paying too much attention to his work. Found the courtroom scene in the course of my recent YT stalkings and he was amazing.

hey, it was the same for me. Saw most of his films, on tv, occasionally, but didn't really pay attention. it was just 'what's on tv?' Until that fatal spring of 2004.... when I watched Revolutions. It just 'hit' me. Red pill and epiphany all in one :D Sent me watching everything with new eyes.
And then Constantine happened :D

Conor never seemed that hulking to me, though; I get the feeling that he'd get easily defeated in a fight.

Fair point. Speaking for myself, I guess what I was thinking of is not whether the "tough" characters would win every fight but how the actor seems to change his physical bearing from role to role. To me it seems like more than weight gain or how they dress him; he literally looks scary enough that I'd be walking the other way if I came across him in a dark alley. I love that he can convey the physical weakness of Thomas Anderson and the sheer intimidation factor of Tom Ludlow (to use the most extreme example).

Related to which, is it weird that none of his characters really look alike to me? I see, at most, a passing physical resemblance between them.

.... he does that, I've noticed.
even his facial features seem to change, for each character.
It's fascinating.

Thanks, I thought I was losing it. I was all "Nobody can actually do that in real life" and here he is doing it.

Also, I cannot stop watching the part where he walks into the bar rapping "Big Poppa." I. Love. It.

Agreed. Keanu manages to give each of his characters their own distinct personality, voice and presence.

All the more puzzling that the general opinion seems to be that he always plays the same character. *shrug*

I think this Youtube video I made some time ago kind of illustrates what I'm saying. All characters have the same line (I don't know), but Keanu has them all saying it in a different way.

Yeah, that nails it. :D

and yep - I can usually tell his characters apart just by looking at them, even those from movies I haven't seen, or if they're wearing different clothes or been photoshopped or something.

It might be an issue of familiarity though. I can't do the same with actors I only know from casually watching their movies, but if it's an actor I've been a fan with for a while, then the differences between their characters is stark enough to jar when people insist on pairing photos of one character with articles about a different movie, or for use in role-playing.

You can even tell from which period a off-work picture is taken because he looks so much like the character he was playing at the time. And indeed it is not just the hair or the clothes, it's the facial features as well.

yep. And the expressions. :D And his general energy level.

Apparently one of the things Keanu does after finishing a film is to go for a haircut.

Funny but I've never studied a single scene (maybe because I am not a filmmaker). It was rather 'either I like it or I don't' and it looks like I do like Keanu's work :) Of course I remember some scenes and quotes because some are very memorable. But from the next time when I watch Keanu I'll start to think about these pieces from which all the films are built.

I noticed that too, he's changing his hairstyle quite often.
