Henry's Crime (2010) – 2015-01-29 01:35:02
a story within story

You can watch it over and over again and still find something new!
Dangerous Liaisons (1988) – 2014-12-17 05:35:07
of wigs, harp, opera, love letters, and sword-fight

I watched it a long, long time ago. Perhaps, this is the film that made me started being curious for Keanu Reeves phenomenon. This film stole my attention for the full two hours, even when I was terribly drowsy that night. No matter what critics say in later years, I am personally impressed by the Dangerous Liaisons. It was the first time in my life that something can be so amusing, luscious, rich, elaborate, and full of moral messages at the same time. Innocent characters being put at stake for mere fun of powerful men and women; but by the end, the one who cries is the one who started the entire joke.

"Things are not always what they seem," I think to be a connecting theme in many of Keanu's films.

My Own Private Idaho (1991) – 2014-11-23 22:06:21
As dreamy as it can be

This film starts beautifully and ends beautifully. The yodel, the endless roads, the vast prairies, Mike's dreams of happy family ... these are some parts that remind me of my own childhood, of bedtime story books read by my father before I get to sleep. Only in the middle the film that we find oddities that unfit for underage storytelling: sex for sale, men having threesome, incestuous relationship by mentally ill woman, and promiscuous intimacy. I waited for years before I decided to give myself a try to watch this film, particularly because of edgy publicities surrounding the intimate camp fire scene which, in my opinion, has been overrated.

There are more to see and enjoy from My Own Private Idaho. The cinematography is really enchanting. We can follow candid conversations in the diner from all angles ... whether it is from above characters seat, or from the tip of Mike's foot on a table where his buddy has his meal. There are strangely funny people too, whose souls we may appreciate despite of their imperfection as broken humans.

As for Mike and Scott relationship, I felt relieved to know that it was not actually intended to be "that far" in the beginning. Scott's brotherly affection for the lonely soul Mike was tweaked due to River's improvisation on the script: What started as a hug then ends on a kiss. Probably, the purpose was to add more "salt and pepper" to the story, thus adjusts more to the taste buds of broader audiences and current interests. I do not know, it is just a guess. What I know is My Own Private Idaho has touched my private dreams.

I just ... can't

This is very incomprehensible, at least for me ...
River's Edge (1986) – 2014-11-20 21:41:05
Absolutely one of his beautiful performances

This is the film where you can see his range of emotions. An authentic example of good acting capabilities. There were moments when you could see Matt withheld his feelings and tried not be involved, like conversations in the car. There were moments when he felt stuck, confused, then exploded, like interrogation scene in the police office. Also look how he treated his little sister with much better care than his attitude towards his parents, which implied his skepticism towards adults life. Partially, this film shows how unrestrained was Keanu performance, back in the days before he becomes famous with all of the expectations and pressure for being a celebrity. I think, this film tells an "ugly" story with a beautiful delivery.
