EPILOGUE – Life, the Universe, and Everything

Prologue: It Begins on a Thursday

At precisely twelve midnight on the first of January 1885, the skies of Hill Valley, California were shot through with a brilliant flash of electrical blue light. Down below, New Year's fesitivities in full swing, residents gazed to the heavens in wide-eyed fear and clutched each other in conviction that the end had come. But it hadn't, and they soon let down their guard.

None of them saw the strangely modified 1982 DeLorean DMC sports car come plummeting out of the clouds, carrying in its driver's seat an extremely frazzled Dr. Emmett L. Brown trying desperately to regain control of the malfunctioning time machine. The lightning bolt that sent him through time had caught him completely unawares. He blacked out the second he hit ground, but survived.

With a damaged time machine – which he buried in a cave – and no other way home, Emmett took up a job as a blacksmith in 1885 Hill Valley. But he never forgot his teenage friend Marty McFly, stuck in a similar situation in 1955. He drew up instructions to find and repair the buried DeLorean, along with a letter informing Marty of his whereabouts, and entrusted them to the care of Western Union for delivery 70 years in the future.

Marty got the instructions and came back to rescue him... but days before their departure, Emmett fell in love with the new schoolteacher Clara Clayton and chose to stay behind when the plan to bring her along fell through. Marty went back to the future on his own, where the time machine was destroyed right after by an oncoming train.

Doc and Clara were married on the fifteenth of December that year in Hill Valley. Their first son, Jules Eratosthenes Brown, was born in 1886, followed by his brother Verne Newton Brown in October 1888. Both boys remained unaware of their father’s true history until early 1893, when Emmett completed his second time machine, and thought it time to reveal his identity to his sons.

He did, and the family had several adventures through time, some more dangerous than the next. Their home in the late nineteenth century became slowly but surely filled with objects from various time periods, noticeably those of the future, but none of them brought such trouble as the latest addition.

It was a computer: one that had the ability to access the Internet of 2004. Things went fine for several months, but then Emmett made the decision to install a similar computer in his old garage home in 1985. He felt he owed it to Marty. He had, in certain respects, abandoned the teen, but he thought that if they could still communicate through e-mail, perhaps things wouldn’t be so bad.

He couldn’t have been more wrong.

One computer continuously breaking across the barriers of space-time was fine. Two computers doing that was a totally different matter all together, and this is the story of what happened.

It begins on a Thursday.
