Site up on current webhost till 26th Dec

Talked to my webhost, and apparently WINM would stay up until 26th December latest once the DNS updates catch up. It's the latest bit that scares me. Ticking clock here.

Back home only on the 21st close to midnight whereupon I'll probably fall straight into bed; will only be able to start backups and shifting on the 22nd, so I'm desperately hoping the site holds until then.

My laptop has the most recent version of the site, which is good, BUT I stupidly left it sitting on my desk instead of moving it. My room has a tendency to minorly flood during the rainy season (i.e. now) because of this crack in the wall, and last-last Australian trip about half my desk got wet and there were puddles on the floor and a lot of stuff got spoiled and had to be thrown out (actually a blessing in disguise. I hoard junk.) and basically I'm really hoping that doesn't happen this time because I like my laptop and it's got lots of files and good things on it and I will be seriously depressed if it gets damaged.

Next most recent backup on my thumbdrive is about a few days behind, which doesn't sound like much but is actually quite a lot of articles. arrgggh.

Need to find a free webhost. So far can't find any as good as my current one.

Am still mad at Name.com for being stupid. It's not like it's my webhost's fault if one of the sites hosted on it was a phishing site. There are over a thousand sites hosted there. Contacted Name.com and had a long debate with them over e-mail. They refuse to see reason. It's their "company policy" not to allow phishing sites, they say.

Back home, everything is safe, nothing got wet.

I have a complete copy of the site on my laptop and a slightly-outdated copy on my thumbdrive, so there's not much fear of losing everything; it's just its presence on the Internet that might vanish for a while.

Still trying to find a good host. argh. The best one I've found so far has a forbidden words list. Am just hoping that this doesn't ban stuff like 'pornography' like the other host, because it looks like I'll have to go with this one.

Costs money, too ($2.95/month), if I wish to have files over 2MB, which I definitely need - five of the scripts are over that size. It's affordable - at my current pool of donated-cash I can last about 2 and a half years if I start now - but the annoying thing is that I don't need all those extra features that the paid hosting would give, apart from the large file upload thing. Unless I host the scripts elsewhere and link to that. Which would however mean that my current links there would break, but I guess that's the small price I have to pay.

in my personal opinion, 2.95 USD/month is not much ; heck, I can help, if needed. after all, I do buy books and stuff for more than 70 USD monthly...

I think the idea would be to have a stable 'home', so the site can be found easily. "we" can always keep in contact, one way or the other, but the large public should be able to find the main site at any time.
just my opinion, of course.

and even if you don't need now the extra features, who knows what extra sections you might decide to add to the site, and then need them...

all in all, the idea is to find a good and reliable host server.
