Was reminded of her absence after seeing this thread: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0191397/board/flat/65240234, reading it today for the first time.

Tried tracking her down; only thing I've got so far is that she's Canadian, nothing else.

...I don't know why this disturbs me so much, but it does.

Look, if any of you die, please have procedures in place to inform other people online so there can be some form of closure. This not-knowing is far worse.

Reviews: 0		 Shudder. I hope that she is very much alive, and that through some unexplained chain of events she simply hasn't posted anymore. One more thought: her profile has a star next to it, which means that she authenticated it. I did that with a credit card, so maybe Imdb has some information that could be used? They won't give out personal info, but maybe you could persuade them to look into it.

Just sent a request to the IMDb Help Desk:

Can you check if this IMDb user is still alive?

Some of us haven't heard from her for a year after a very sudden halt in posts
both on IMDb and another website, and we're getting kind of worried.

E-mails are bouncing because Yahoo deactivated her account after four months of
dormancy, and we haven't been able to contact her at all or find anyone who has
any idea of what might have happened. The only information about her we have is
that she's from Canada.

A friend of mine suggested that you might might be able to help us because she
has an authenticated account. For example, if she authenticated with a credit
card or mobile number, is it possible to check if they have been deactivated?
Are dead people's credit cards and mobile numbers usually deactivated?

I write a fair amount of letters in my day job where I have no legal standing on behalf of my clients, and therefore the way I write my requests matters a lot. In my experience, friendliness (without groveling of course) usually works best. Fingers crossed that Imdb takes action.

So, that's a dead end as well. I thought it was relatively easy to get someone's IP-adress, though (not that I know how that's done)? And from that you can get someone's name? This is starting to get to me, too.

Reviews: 13		 apparently, getting one's IP is easy, there are applications which do that...
...problem is, the IP then has to be tracked back to the Internet provider, and they should give you the customer's coordinates... which they never do, unless you work for the FBI ( well... you know what to insert here )

so for us 'pedestrians' it would be a dead end as well.

... no useful ideas, sorry...

But nancloutier's IP is available on this site on her posts. It's from Canada. That's all I've been able to find out from it.

Of course there could be many reasons for it (I remember that a friend of mine, keanu4ever, did the same: she stopped posting suddenly, but at least she told me personally that she probably would do it), so we must remain optimist, but, you know, one can never tell...

I didn't know it was so difficult to find someone's reallife identity from the net. In a way, it's a good thing though, right? Just imagine the amount of crazy people who could show up on your doorstep unannounced. I only know of one (quite serious) incident where a poster was bothered irl, and that was because she was so trusting she had given out personal information online.

Tell them you're worried about a long time cyberfriend and have no way to find out if they're still alright - law enforcement can trace information without a need for investigation (as in broken laws, suspicion and such). At least here in the States they can. Much like an information operator at a phone company and an unlisted number - if there's reason (usually considered as an emergency) they can contact the party and pass along a message that someone is trying to reach them.

And considering that you were apparently close enough to be worrying that something bad has happened to her, I'd say that's a worthy reason to see if law enforcement might locate her. Worth a try anyway maybe?
