Phew, I feel better already. Thanks. Anyways, and here's another one:

THE COLLAPSE OF COP FLICKS
'STREET KINGS' AND KEANU REEVES CEMENT GOOD-GUYS-GONE-BAD TREND

I too thought when SK came out that I was kinda fed up with cop movies. Amost impossible not to make them formulaic at this point, and bad cops in movies are a dime a dozen these days.

...I was fed up with cop movies too. And on top of that, I don't believe in the establishment. Grew up in a communist country so I distrust authorities by default.
But Elroy's cops are REAL. Human. Flawed to the bone. And that makes them believable. And Ayer brought Elroy's realism into the year 2008. It can't get more real than that.

And that's what I want. Realism. In caps lock. See, one of the main problems of our times - movie industry included - is that there's too much escapism.

... of course, I'm not included in the newyorker select "we" of that article ;)

And yes, the characters were formulaic and clicheistc and whatnot. But I was totally, completely impressed by Ke's performance. Too bad most reviewers can't see past the movie's genre and don't realize that it's not what it looks like ;)
and no, that's not the fan in me speaking. just the movie buff.
