I noticed that Anakin has added a section for Dogstar to the site, very nice BTW, and this reminded me (I don't know why) about one of the poll questions about books. "Have you ever read a book just because Keanu has?"

So just out of curiosity has anyone here ever listen to a band/album just because Keanu has or does?

I have long been a Joy Division fan (RIP Ian Curtis) and I admit I tracked down some stuff by The Pixies because of Keanu, they are good but not something I would add to my CD collection. Anyone else?

Yep, mostly Dogstar, and I checked out Joy Division solely because of him.

well...
I started listening consciously to Joy Division only after reading it's one of his favorite bands. But I do admit watching "Control" had a certain influence, too. And I'm glad I did. Still have to figure out the lyrics, though ;)

Listened to the Ramones, too. Liked the lyrics, but not the sound. Not my kind of music... Listened to Anthrax, out of curiosity, but the only songs I did like were "Safe Home" (video's got nothing to do with it. not much, anyway ;) ) and "Exit". but the last one's written by Bono and The Edge, so that's probably why. Listened to Radiohead, too... but they're a bit too cerebral for me ;)
All in all, I don't share the same taste in music as Mr.Reeves.
At the moment, I'm a Foo Fighters / 3 Doors Down kinda girl.

BUT after reading one of his last interviews, I run a youtube search on "Neil Young". And man... there's a whole universe out there waiting to be discovered. At least for me.

Hmmmm, I seem to remember him having listed a lot of bands and musical artists as favourites. How about if we tried to gather as many as possible in this thread?

Joy Division is one, and I seem to remember him mentioning Fugazi. And Black Flag. Anyone else that haven't been mentioned in this thread already? I am of the impression that he listened to a lot of punk/punkish bands in the past, and maybe still does.

Myself, I'm quite openminded when it comes to music, except that I don't like most of the stuff that gets played on the radio. I'll listen to anything from Crowbar to Kate Bush, with a bit of world music thrown in for good measure. But I never cared much for punk, I must admit...

On the Dogstar Myspace page, Keanu's musical influences are listed as:
The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding

And his favourite bands:
John Coltrane, Ramones, Exploited, Joy Division, Clash, Fugazi, Sonic Youth, Lync, Robert Johnson

I like any music with a good tune, regardless of lyrics, though apparently most people are concerned about lyrics. :\ Most of the time the words don't even register because I'm too caught up in the tune, and I've been surprised many times when I actually went to look up lyrics and discovered that the song was actually about something...

I, too, can easily ignore the lyrics and just focus on the music. I guess it's easier for those of us whose first language is something other than English.

As for the musical tastes of The Anu, didn't he once mention some old jazz group? Something akin to Benny Goodman, etc? Yes, John Coltrane has been mentioned, but I seem to remember a name starting with B.

I never thought about the bands listed as Keanu's musical influences on the Dogstar page, but it seem a little tongue-in-cheek to mention The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Otis Reading as his influences. They're all very different from the bands he's stated himself that he listens to.

He's mentioned The Beatles quite a few times, so I'm fairly certain that one's legit. Like here:

Not sure about the others, though.

He was also said to listen to Butthole Surfers in an interview from the late 80's.

BTW, for anyone who would like to learn more about the artists mentioned, I strongly recommend allmusic.com. Just type in the artist's/band's name, and you'll find bios, lists of albums, and sometimes also soundbites and videos. Right now I'm watching a live video by Butthole Surfers titled Dust Devil, and I actually kinda like it. It would be the perfect type of music for a 10-hour drive where you're getting tired but don't want to stop until you reach your destination:

It's at the bottom of the page, under Music Videos:

Never can go wrong with the Beatles. :) When I read that, it made me smile because I like them too.

I must confess that I started reading Philip K. Dick's novels because of Keanu.

I've been downloading some of the tunes from the films too, like the one that plays at the beginning of the Lake House.

OH, I just found this list of music that he listened to while shooting Sweet November in San Francisco:

Archers of Loaf, Built to Spill, Hüsker Dü, Joy Division, Elvis Costello, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, Dinosaur Jr, Stravinsky, Sonic Youth.

Pretty varied, methinks. :-)
