Images are of very poor quality, but until the DVD is released, it's all I could find...
the rectangular stamp, in red on the screen
(stamp says: 'to be put down' )

I haven't seen it yet. No release date in the UK as of today :(

What I want to know is, the scene with where the dog dies - is it horrid? Do they show it on screen or do they cut away and you know what is happening off camera?

It wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be. While John is passing out, his vision gets blurry, and through that blurriness you see someone pick up the dog in the distance; you hear it yelp as it dies, and then John blacks out. It all happens in a few seconds, no gore or anything, and you can barely see it happening since everything is blurred. It's mostly just sad.

IMDb says it'll be out in the UK on the 2nd of January: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2911666/releaseinfo

Ah...bless you, Anakin. Good news on two fronts...I get to seem the film in Jan and, when I do, I won't be too traumatised when the doggy 'gets it'!

Thanks

Thank you, Luca - I couldn't see it but suspected that was the reason he chose that dog. After he has stapled himself (good God!!!) he looks up, sees the dogs, and is once again human. Very subtle but absolutely beautiful.

Luxuriant, I've seen the film a bunch of times (6 so far, to be exact) and it wasn't until probably the 4th time that I got the full weight of the scene with Daisy's death and the aftermath. Anakin is right, you don't really see the dog die. Nonetheless, I really, really recommend closing your eyes until after he buries her.

SPOILERS AHEAD. BIG ONES. JUST SAYING. SPOILERS!!!

You don't see the dog actually die. However, at first, Daisy is cowering under a table. Nobody drags her out from under that table. She (actually he, Andy, who is alive and very well) sees John being beaten and COMES OUT, I think to try to protect him, and that's when she is killed.
After that, when John comes around, you first see a trail of blood on the floor to him. He sees Daisy, then touches her and realizes what has happened. He then sits with the dead Daisy in his lap, stroking her. I found this whole thing, after I realized it, agonizing.

... but that is what flips his switch, so to speak.
Remember the daisy on Helen's coffee cup, the daisies in her bracelet... then Daisy appears. Daisy is not just the cutest puppy on earth, it's also a replacement of some kind... a reminder of the other 'Daisy' in his life. And it was taken from him. Stolen from him. Killed from him. (to paraphrase Wick himself). And when while washing Daisy's blood from the floor, he has flashbacks of both Daisies dying...then he looks up...and there's a look in his eyes which says Wick has just flipped past any turning point.
He enters John Wick mode.
And, as MmeRenard observed, only leaves that mode when he sees the other dog. The one he saves and takes home with him. Because they are alike; both were tagged 'to be put down'. And they saved each other.

Yes, the moment is agonizing. It's also essential for the story.

Very true, Luca.

Also, I think he says "took that from me...stole that from me...killed that for me"

I LOVE that all of this is there but none of it is obvious. I don't like Quentin Tarantino movies - Django was fine until it went all ridiculous at the end - and i don't like Robert Rodriguez movies. They are too bloody, too tongue-in-cheek, never sure when they should be serious if ever. The humor in John Wick is appropriate in every way, the timing is perfect. It takes what should be seriously but always has enough lightness to make it entertaining. There's no way I can find Sin City entertaining.
There's meticulous attention to detail throughout, and Keanu's performance is elegant in every way. He is REALLY, really good.

thanks :) Paraphrase edited ;)

I don't care for either Tarantino or Rodriguez because - except for the humor in Pulp Fiction - they're just too bloody cartoonish for my taste (pun intended).
But I love Frank Miller's comics; and I think the first Sin City movie was a good adaptation of his work. Didn't watch the second yet.
John Wick the movie? It's a Frank Miller screen adaptation done right. Except he didn't write it :D

Yes, nothing is obvious; but it's all there for those so inclined to see :D
And the tone is set by that Shibumi book; it's as if that split-second frame is saying 'everything you see from now on is to be taken with a pinch of salt'

True, the attention to detail is just incredible. It rivals the Matrix movies. (which, in my book, is the supreme compliment ;) )

Later later edit. Like weeks later
... just stumbled upon a gif on tumblr and it's " Killed that from me!"

watched JW in theaters for the fifth time. yeah, I know, I know.

that small detail about the huge guy who washed the window/s, part of the cleaning team aka the dinner reservation. It seemed 'borrowed' from the first Matrix movie. the Wachowskis' cameo.

oh, and the part where Viggo tells Iosef the 'story of Wick', soundtrack, images and all - it was like a scene from a western. :)

Good for you! It's getting a little more challenging for me to find it up here, so road trips are in order.

Yes, very much like a Western!

Wow! I just realised how much I'd forgotten about having what is called 'fun' at the movies. It's been quite a long time since I had a wholesome movie experience and man! Am I glad to have watched this in iMax and thank heavens I stopped reading and watching too much on the movie before actually watching it.

The initial few scenes without the heaviness or distraction of background music, was unbelievably effective. What needed to be said was said in select few frames and the silence complemented his grief perfectly and it made us feel the mourning. The bracelet, collar after that, all were simple yet potent little scenes. It wouldn't have been that effective without the presence of someone capable of carrying those scenes in silence. Just perfect! The thugs beating him to a pulp and killing Daisy was too much for me to handle, even after I prepared myself for it. I don't know if it was the iMax effect but i shuddered at that metal sound. I don't know if it was cut in my country or its the same everywhere, the scene in the trailer where he says to Daisy after the excellent car maneuvering sequence "you like it huh?" wasn't there. Another one, he says" Rusty i guess" in the trailer to Marcus but not so in the movie. In the movie he says, retired... Not sure if it spent sometime on the editing table after release.

It is certainly not easy to arrive at an appealing balance between invincibility and vulnerability with respect to the protagonist, especially in movies like this. You wouldn't really care much for an invincible assassin, you need thatfear, you need that coldness while you also need that vulnerability and emotion, however deep and dark it is. I felt that, that journey for the character was amazingly well travelled and captured :-) . He talked about the colour palette in some of his earlier interviews. I understood what he meant after watching the entire movie. From grief to anger to rage to redemption to hope, there was a lovely metamorphosis. I'm guessing this is one of those movies where you will notice details everytime you watch. Loved the comic book touch to subtitles, making those 'emphasis' words bold :-) -interesting! Likewise with the videogame! I was pleasantly surprised with Shibumi (it was Shibumi right?) I did not know about the book till recently when I chanced upon it while looking for the Rain series info. Not sure who thought of it (ahem)but, smart!! Can anyone tell me about the first book on the table though? Did not notice properly. Also, I loved the sweet silent nod to their earlier movie associations with the nice doctor, the landline ring(hope that was deliberate but can't say) and The Continental bearing similarities to Midnight's place in Constantine.   The ending!!! Awww.. He takes in the pitbull which is to be put down - New lease of life for both of them in a sort of against all odds and a new beginning kind of way!! Such a cute touch! My cousin didn't notice and I went, ahhhh it was stamped on the sheet, not sure how many did! Till the credits rolled I never once felt I was watching Keanu. I only saw Wick and I left saying I miss you already :'(

Now I can happily read this thread, am sure some of you would've noticed a lot more than me :-)

Just remembered, I'm pretty sure it was a natural response during the shoot but you know when we suppress anger or grief, sometimes you can visibly see the pulse at the temples or neck? Those tiny beats made that daisy scene more convincing and disturbing for me :'(

I was just about to ask you if you'd seen it. :D Glad to know you liked it!

It looks like some of the scenes in the trailer were from different takes- someone elsewhere mentioned how the "I'm thinkin' I'm back!" line was a different take in the trailer vs the film, where he preferred the trailer one but the film version flowed better with the rest of the epic monologue.

:D loved it! It was a packed house and I could see that pretty much everyone enjoyed it.
Yeah, few scenes differed from the trailer but I was eagerly looking forward to watching Daisy's precious little expression on the big screen

yeah, I noticed the different 'I'm thinking I'm back' lines. And I guess the "you like it huh?" didn't make it in the final cut because while perfect for the trailer, it didn't exactly fit in the bigger picture. (even if it was cute. probably they cut it because it was too cute :|).

there's also a matter of editing in the trailer; Wick does say the 'Rusty, I guess' line in the movie, but not to Marcus; to Winston, at the Continental bar...

that's one of the reasons I usually stay away from trailers. Prefer to watch the feature film directly.
