Giladora, I never thought that far, but... it does make a lot of sense.
thanks for sharing these thoughts :)

@Giladora

Thank you for sharing. Really interesting. Your interpretations of freshwater fish and endless road are enlightening.

While I agree that Scot plans a perfect revenge towards his father. I don't understand why he hates his own father so much. What kind of crime a father must have committed to deserve this?

I am also not sure of his rebellion against the ruling class. A rebel to the norm of the society often pays high price and is ostracised. Scott is the opposite, he is calculated (sets a time limit, as Maria said) and cold (deserts his friends), and he gets what he wants from both worlds.

LucaM mentioned Shakespeare. I haven't read Shakespeare. I guess I might have totally missed the mark?

I want to add that in the end Scott voluntarily became someone who might be exactly like his father. He didn't have to, but he chose to.

@koala. i saw in Wikipedia that the movie is loosely based in some of Shakespeare's plays.

Scott:
- "my dad,he has more fucking righteous gall...than all the property
and people he lords over...and those he also created.like me, his son. I almost get sick thinking I am a son to him.You know you have to be , as good as him to keep up.You have to be able to lift as big a weight. You have to be able to throw that weight as far..or make as much money, or be as heartless. My dad doesn't know
that I'm just a kid ,He thinks I'm a thread ."

him being logical or reasonable about these words ,is another matter . this is the "reality " of Scott , right now . he doesn't feel that he "has to" , coz simply he is an "in charge " character . he doesn't hate his father ( he as a decent character , from what i remember ?!!) but he doesn't want to believe the fact that he is actually like his father . that's how Shakespearean it can get . I haven't read "Henry IV" neither "Henry V" , but I've read Shakespeare enough to say , the gentleman has a sense of destiny in most of his plays . a duel on Fate . which that image of Freshwater Fishes , stands as the whole and basic of Idea of "the written" , for me .

@Koala : I stand corrected . agree with you that Scott is not rebelling against the Ruling Class . I chose such a wrong term . I think the word "RULE " was dancing in my head when i wrote it , you are absolutely right :)

Yeah! This makes sense.

Exception from the wiki

Themes and interpretations

In the "coming-of-age" interpretation, Hal's acquaintance with Falstaff and the tavern lowlife humanises him and provides him with a more complete view of Elizabethan era life.[15] At the outset, Prince Hal seems to pale in comparison with the fiery Henry Percy, the young noble lord of the North (whom Shakespeare portrays considerably younger than he was in history in order to provide a foil for Hal). Many readers interpret the history as a tale of Prince Hal growing up, evolving into King Henry V,[16] perhaps the most heroic of all of Shakespeare's characters, in what is a tale of the prodigal son adapted to the politics of medieval England.[17]

Other readers have, however, looked at Hal more critically; Hal can appear as a budding Machiavel. In this reading, there is no "ideal king": the gradual rejection of Falstaff is a rejection of Hal's humanity in favour of cold realpolitik.[18]

Hmm, Utrecht is basically right around the corner from where I live. Since I liked the one George Sluizer movie I've seen (Spoorloos), I might actually go see this movie if I can get my hands on a ticket.

Wow! Wow! Thanks Trinity!

I feel transported back in time by this... lots of emotions.

First he looked amazing when he opened that door, it was like whooooosh whooooaaa!

He also looked much, much older than 23 (I know some people would automatically assume it was his drug use that made him look that way, but I wonder if they would have said that if he hadn't died and they didn't know about his habit).

Ahhh you guys, what a loss. Seeing this is giving me bittersweet pangs.

The opening scene of the clip is of a car driving down the road, it's like it is picking up right where My Own Private Idaho left off, since the last scene was of River getting put into a car and driven off.

Oh my gosh, Joke you should go! It's the last time you'll ever see a "new" River Phoenix movie released on the big screen.

@Softie Dark Blood being River Phoenix last "new" movie and a world premiere in Utrecht at that, I assume it will be hard to get a ticket (not that I'm not going to try to get one). But, even if I can't get a ticket for the premiere, I do expect the movie will get a theatrical release in the Netherlands regardless of its success at the film festival.

Interview with Udo Kier : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJb5zwGCERs

I didn't watch the whole interview, but at about 20 minutes in, there's a part about My Own Private Idaho.

Udo says there that he liked to have dinner with Keanu, River and Gus, but that it cost him a lot of money, since he got to pay because he was playing the sugardaddy, even though the others earned like 100 times more than him. Talk about staying in character. :-)

Well, as I expected it will be impossible to get a ticket to the Dark Blood (River Phoenix movie) premiere.

Ticket sales for the film festival doesn't start until September 7th, but the movie is already marked as sold out.

Guess I'll have to wait until this movie gets its normal theatrical run.

@ Joke, Thanks for the heads up on that vid of Udo Kier, I watched most of it although I don't understand german. He is an interesting man and it looks like he's been a working actor for his entire adult life. Funny that I find out about that fun sky tram in Palm Springs from you and Udo. Looks like something I would like to do! Sorry about the ticket problem. We will all see it...eventually. :)
