I thought that I would be the first one to bring you this bit of news here.

So is it just me - admittedly not a Walking Dead kinda gal - but TWO cannibal pictures in a row? I love that this is described as "a dystopian cannibal story" - somewhat redudant? wouldn't you just love to see a UTOPIAN cannibal story?

Cannibals. Vampires. Meh. But Keanu has surprised me many, many times before, so we'll see!

Ana Lily Amirpour's highly anticipated follow-up to A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night feints in the direction of sensationalistic horror — and, be forewarned, blood is spilled and limbs are hacked — but The Bad Batch, like Amirpour's deliciously low-key debut, uses genre as a springboard for high style and social commentary.

The aforementioned girl (Suki Waterhouse) is one of thousands of Americans deemed unacceptable to civilized society. While wandering in her desert exile, she is captured by a community of cannibals. She loses an arm and a leg but manages to escape, soon ending up at a place called Comfort, a very different enclave of outcasts lorded over by a groovy cult leader (Keanu Reeves) with a heavily armed and pregnant harem. Our amputee heroine is safe at Comfort but still does not quite feel that she has found her tribe.

On an excursion beyond Comfort's gates, she encounters one of her former cannibal captors (Jason Momoa), who's in search of his young daughter. She can help him find the girl. But can she do it without one of them getting slaughtered in the human-eat-human world where savagery is considered central to survival?

Many of the film's pleasures are in its details, like a boombox-shaped DJ booth and a cannibal camp in an airplane cemetery. But what makes The Bad Batch meaty is the way Amirpour subtly steeps her premise in politics. There's no mistaking the exclusionary policies of this imagined America for anything less than a cautionary vision of where the real America could go if left unchecked.

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix is closing a deal for the SVOD rights to The Bad Batch, the Ana Lily Amirpour-directed film that stars Jason Momoa, Jim Carrey, Keanu Reeves, Suki Waterhouse and Diego Luna. The picture premiered tonight at the Venice Film Festival, where it is competing for the Golden Lion prize. The film was made by Annapurna Pictures and VICE Media, and it’s described as a dystopian fairy tale set in a Texas wasteland where society’s rejects are just trying to make ends meat (pun intended). Amirpour wrote the script and it’s the followup to her acclaimed Farsi-language vampire genre debut, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. In this film, another girl (Waterhouse) wanders alone into a band of cannibalistic drifters. While Netflix got the streaming video on demand rights, there is still business to be done on the film, as CAA is shopping the domestic theatrical distribution rights and certain other territories.

Comfort, however, is controlled by a goofily sinister cult leader, who exhorts the inhabitants to “follow the dream”; he is played by Keanu Reeves, on excellent deadpan form and looking like the long-lost brother of Ron Burgundy.

Screen Media Films has acquired the U.S. rights for Ana Lily Amirpour’s The Bad Batch, a day before its North American premiere in Toronto. The deal, which was negotiated well into the night, comes after the film enjoyed a Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival where it had its world premiere. With cameos from Keanu Reeves, Jim Carry and Diego Luna, the dystopian love story is set in a Texas wasteland among a community of cannibals and stars Suki Waterhouse, Jason Momoa, Giovanni Ribisi, and Yolonda Ross. Screen Media plans to release the film in the first quarter of next year.
