Aren't we forgetting something here? The whoa of all whoas? The very source and the most über-excellent of the excellent whoas, to which we bow our heads in awestruck admiration?

The anuwhoa, of course!

OK, there's a "whoa" and a great deal of surfer-dude'ism in this funny interview of Our Man and Patric Swayze in Japan in 1991:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3yvouhNjBc&feature=rec-HM-fresh+div

On another note, I've been trying to find video clips where Keanu says his own name. This interview is one of them (he explains the name's meaning), and to me it sounds as if he pronounces it Kee-anu. I used to think that was the correct pronounciation, but then I read that the correct way to pronounce it is Kay-anu. I think I read it here on WINM first, actually. So now I'm confused and it's all your fault! Does anyone have any interview clip where he clearly pronounces it as Kayanu? Or any clips at all where he says his name?

I obviously haven't got anything better to do with my spare time...

According to the Man himself either way suits - I've heard him say it both ways. The native way is 'kay' but most insist on saying 'key' and I do think that K says it that way more often. Who knows? It could a be just another decision to keep distance between himself and that side of his genes. Or it could be a completely human choice to take the road of less troublesomeness, on all fronts ;).

Oh, by the by, the interview he did for SGG - the 3 part one - he says Kay anu in that one, but ya have to be really fast (and use the replay a lot) to catch it :). I actually think that K'ay'anu is how he hears it in his head and how he says it when he's not paying attention.. but K 'ee' anu is easier to pronounce I suppose. The tongue doesn't seem to like to deal with opposing A sounds right next to each other ;).

There was some 2005 Constantine interview in which he said kay. Most of the time it's too fast to tell, but so far I've never heard him stress the kee the way some interviewers do.

Apparently there are also people in Hawaii who pronounce it kee, but the official proper pronunciation is kay. :\\

I tried to find that interview on YouTube, but I got lost in the many Keanu & Sandra interviews (gosh, those two are a riot!). Seer, do you remember where those interviews are? Like, what words should I search for?

Ani, I agree that he doesn't seem to stress the 'kee' as much as other people do. But I do remember the interview with Alice Cooper where he says that he only knew Keanu as Kee. Kee! Oh!

Funnily - or strangely - enough, I find it difficult to say kay-anu, although that's how any Norwegian would've pronounced it if they didn't relate it to the English language. I guess I've just gotten so used to everyone saying kee.

Hey, why doesn't someone just call him and ask...? ;-)

Hi everyone,

As the resident person from a Pacific nation here, allow me to iterate: technically Keanu's name is pronounced Kay-ah-nu. I did find a clip on YouTube where the interviewer asked, and he said "Kay-ah-nu but Kee-ah-nu (whatever)". So technically Kay-ah-nu, but he's probably used to people mispronouncing it, so accepts Kee-ah-nu. I may have added that clip it to my Keanu YouTube playlist.

On the topic of clips on YouTube, I've just returned to my playlist as I'm writing my essay, and about six of the clips have been removed from YouTube. Gaaaaaaaah!!! Don't they realise that there are people who are using YouTube for academic purposes?!?! I'm seriously considering having to rip the remaining clips from YouTube on the off-chance that they may be removed in future.

Another off-chance question: Would you happen to have any relevant Reeves excerpts from the following book, please (or can this be found in the archives)?

De Angelis, Michael. Gay Fandom and Crossover Stardom: James Dean, Mel Gibson, and Keanu Reeves. Durham: Duke University Press, 2001.

It's not in the University library, and could prove useful.

Finally, I watched Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure yesterday. I wasn't sure, but I think the first and only utterance of the Ted 'Whoa' is at the final presentation, when Sigmund Freud analyses Ted and his relationship with his father. I'm going to re-check the Circle K scene, but I was pretty sure there was only the one utterance. Any comments?

Nope, no exerpts from the book.

Ted uttered 11 whoas. Here's the transcript that a fan did -> http://www.whoaisnotme.net/scripts/BTEA_1989_FTS.doc

mascnz, one thing I wonder is whether it is pronounced "kay" as in "bay" - with the ay pronounced as two distinctive, joined vowels (i.e. a dipthong), or if it's just ... argh, there's no easy way to properly describe it in English. What I'm wondering is whether it may be pronounced more like "khe-ah-noo" without the initial "khe" gliding into the y (that is, the last part of the ay dipthong). Oh, and I would guess that the h in "khe" would be pretty much silent.

In the Scandinavian languages, "Ke" would always be pronounced with a short, hard k and a short eh, but the h would be silent. The confusing thing about English is that when you read the alphabet, you pronounce most of the vowels as dipthongs: A is pronounced ay, e is streched into ee (not a dipthong, but a long vowel), i is pronunced eye, o is ou, u is you, etc. I find it extremely hard to explain how to pronounce Norwegian words to someone who only knows English, because all our vowels are pronounced as "clean" single sounds. For instance, the "a" will always be pronounced as in "aha", never as "ay". And "e", in the same way, would be pronounced like the "e" in "hehe", never as "ee".

So, for Norwegians, the correct way to pronounce the combined letters of "keanu" would be something like "khe-A-noo". In my experience, when I try to read words from a language I don't know at all, I find that if I just pronounce them like I would in Norwegian, I'm often pretty spot-on.

Edit: Oh, lookie here! Here's Our Man on Leno, and Leno introduces him as Kee-noo. LOL. Not the best audio in this clip, but at least The Anu sort of explains the pronounciation and meaning of the name.

Here's another YouTube clip where he gets to say his name several times.

I'm no expert, but I think he says kee-a-noo.

Apparently the e in 'ke' is pronounced the way it is in 'bed'; read that on some Hawaiian site that TheWyleyOne linked ages ago.

Aha! Then it *IS* pronounced without a dipthong, just the way we Norwegians would pronounce it. Glorious. I'd probably be able to pronounce it even more correctly than he usually does, then. Methinks. Mayhap. ;-)

Edit: Oh, thanks for this link, nafsunaek! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLzg7iB2I94&feature=related What a hillarious interview. "It's Italian time!" LOL! I could literally feel my blood pressure rising as the story got more and more bizarre. Italian time indeed. Please remind me *never* to go to Italy, no matter what. I don't think I'd do well on Italian time.
