"Bram Stoker's Dracula" - but actually, Coppola's 2014-09-15 03:33 |
---|
Just wanted to chime in with appreciation for a forum in which thorny conversations can be carried on in a respectful, intelligent, and compassionate way. Rock on, all.
I'm with Ani, in admitting I can't separate my views of Keanu, The Man from those for Keanu, The Actor. And just generally, because I'm a storyteller, I hold tremendous respect for all kinds of creative expression, whatever form they take, whether I personally enjoy them or not. That makes my feedback gentle in nature, and I'm dismayed by the sometimes rabid violence with which some tear into others' works. I wish some folks would understand that they aren't the arbiters of good taste and that they've no omnipotence to support a declaration of one thing as "good" and another as "crap." Better, I feel, to say what worked for them and what didn't, and to provide examples in either case. In that way, a conversation can be had, whereas dispassionately damning a thing is a one-sided conversation, at best, and a masturbatory exercise, at its worst. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ |
RIP Robin Williams 2014-08-18 00:31 |
@Anakin - I'm really glad you're doing better. Really glad. :-)
@allhailkingjack - Whether a person with depression does or doesn't take medication for it, s/he may battle it for life - drugs don't necessarily wipe depression out, they're just one tool among several for treating it, and are often used in conjunction with other therapies (talk therapy, for example) for maximum efficacy. Also, there are drugs for depression which don't cause the infamous numbing shutdown AND even though a drug may cause that in one person, another person may have a different experience with it. Finally, sometimes it's exactly the taming of the wide vacillations of emotion and racing mind that allows for a person to focus on the use of her/his gifts. As you noted, brain chemistry varies from person to person, and I think that many variables contribute to a nuanced factor of the human condition, which can't be easily summed up. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ |
RIP Robin Williams 2014-08-13 11:01 |
What a shock it was to learn of his death last night. My dad, who's in his late 60s, was watching the news in the next room and I suddenly heard him say to himself, "Robin Williams, dead?" I was washing the dishes and had to stop to ask him what the hell he'd just said, I was so stunned.
Poor Robin. I ache for him, that he was in such despair. He's given us all so much of himself, over *decades*. (I remember him from Mork and Mindy very well!) (I had an M&M coloring book!) And my heart goes out to his family, especially his children. What a tremendous loss for us all. |
pssst, what's your current fav song/music? 2014-08-13 10:51 |
My current fave has been that since I first heard it in October 2013: Big Data's "Dangerous." It's that danged bass line!!!!! The official video irritates me, so here's a link to a fan-made vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWPcid4l74U.
PS: Depeche fan over here, as well. "If You Want" is a long-time favorite, as are "Get The Balance Right," "I Want You Now," "Pleasure Little Treasure," and the big crossover hit of 1990 (I think it was) "Enjoy the Silence." ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ |
ODE 2014-08-13 10:41 |
My kid ticked me off, incredibly, just a little while ago and I simmered so long I've been trying to cheer myself up by visiting this site (what's that thing Madeleine Kahn said in Clue, about flames on the side of her face? that's been me for the last hour.) (It was Clue, wasn't it???)
Anyway. Thought I'd go for a limerick: Keanu's this guy from Beirut Hmmm. Maybe I oughtta just back away from the poetry, there... :-) ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ |
The world is not ready... 2014-08-13 10:20 |
Hah, I saw this online, too...you know, there's nothing wrong with opting to be a single parent (I'm one), and it's certainly something one sees more and more gals choosing to do, but somehow I think Keanu wouldn't want to go it alone. But who the hell knows, really, apart from the man himself?
BUT, for fun's sake, if KC *were* to adopt a child, which sex do you reckon he would choose (or do you think he'd care either way?). Ooooh, boys' names? Girls' names??? I'll go first: I'm guessing he'd adopt whomever he felt needed him most. If a boy, maybe he'd choose the name Patrick, sort of after his mum. If a girl, I think he might kick it really old-school (like, say, Priscilla or Penelope) OR something quick and breezy (maybe Jan, or Jenny...or Piper!). (Piper Reeves has a ring to it, dunnit?) ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ |

47 Ronin 2014-01-13 01:52 |
I saw 47 Ronin in Manhattan, Christmas Day. The theater (on 42nd street) was *packed*. My son (going on 19 years old) and I had to sit way close to the screen, and it was in 3D, so the viewing was a bit awkward. Would like to see it again on the big screen under more comfortable circumstances, but haven't yet had the opportunity.
Visually, it's beautiful but quite dark (at least, with the 3D glasses it was). There's a rich tapestry of fable in this tale, which I always enjoy, although I can't always connect with folks' motivation (while it's clear that disobeying the Emperor holds severe consequences for the Ronin - a fact they understood and accepted - that Lord Asano accepts the injustice heaped upon him without any resistance does not compute with me). I thought everyone was spectacular, except for the gal who played the witch; I found her line delivery rather awkward. I think the development of Keanu's Kai, from newbie fighter to ass-whoopin warrior, was subtly presented (thank God there was no montage). Kai's inured to his fate; he seems to accept suffering as though it were his due. Not unlike Asano. In that sense, for me, it's all rather heartbreaking, really. As a mom, there's a bit at the very end that finally made me blubber. Definitely want to see this again. Edited to remove a thing that, in hindsight, seemed Spoilery. |
TWEETS OF INTEREST 2013-11-03 01:24 |
Yeah, that juicy thunk, thunk, thunk, of a typewriter is curiously satisfying. It lends a bit of meat to the sensory experience of writing, in a way that clicking on a computer keyboard doesn't. I've read that some writers are going back to their old typewriters 'cause they find the ready access to the Interwebz on their PCs inexorably distracting.
But as for the color yellow, color me not a fan. I believe it stirs up feelings of anger and frustration in folks, and God knows the world doesn't need anymore of that. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ |

The whole scene was so chaotic, I'm amazed he answered as many questions as he did! Wish I'd thought of something intelligent to ask...all that came to mind was, "Coke or Pepsi?" :-D Brava, ladies who got your questions answered, W00000T!!!!!

I know, I saw that!!! :-D :-D :-D
Thanks for that circumscribed view, Ani; it helped my poor, middle-aged eyes out a LOT! |

^I know, I really can't keep up with it... |

^Holy cats, 2008? Was it really so long ago? It feels to me it was just within the past year or so. Wow, I'm now feeling all of my middle age, as I never thought I'd be the one marveling over the supposed swift passage of time... |
any interesting dreams you've had about K? 2013-10-19 09:39 |
Digging this thread! I think it's so sweet that we're thinking about him, even when we're not consciously thinking.
Bluecandlelight, you're definitely not alone. Keanu pops into my nocturnal-mental-movies now and again. The last time I can remember was in May, I think. I'd been wrapped up in a long-time, real-life crush, and I thought something was going to happen between us (a man from work). But then, nothing did, so I decided to let it go. I'd left off looking up stuff on Keanu online while this situation absorbed me, and to sort of get over it, went back to visiting all the usual Keanu-news-heavy-haunts. That night, I dreamt we were walking together. He pushed a baby stroller. I tucked a white down coat into the stroller, but apparently not too securely, as he decided to push it into the stroller better. Not sure there was a baby in it, though. Anyway, at some point he told me, "I missed you." And I echoed the sentiment before waking up. LOL. Surreal. :-D ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ |

Wow, that's pretty amazing news, Ani - thanks for posting it! (And the Cumberbatch AMA, too!) Hmmm...wonder who's gonna type for The Anu. Or do we think he's learned how (he got a computer not long ago, right?)...
