|totally understand why he took the role|
the vulnerability.the rawness. the free pizza rant. a complete opposite of his 'action movie' roles. It's a role for an actor, not a movie star. And his performance is beautiful to watch.
Roth and Lopez wanted to push the joke too far, but in the end the joke's on them.

That's it. That's the movie. And it's beautiful.

An almost unexpected surprise in today's world focused only on feel-good movies. A multi-layered little gem. A story about loneliness, pain, despair, and ways to cope with all that. A story about human connection and lack thereof. A story about games of power, seduction and domination. A meditation on how people behave in front and behind a camera. And the camera becomes a fourth character; a silent witness that's central to the plot; a fourth player that changes the rules of the game.It's a story about finding hope - or not.
No, it's not everyone's cup of tea. yes, it will make most viewers uncomfortable. but those who have patience with this movie will be rewarded with a story that sticks with them for days. it's haunting.
As long as such movies can still be made, there's still hope. it means the moviemakingmagic is still alive.

... why is it that I can't write reviews for the movies I really like ? Mumbling and err-ing and waving my hands and ending with "just watch it, really watch it" is not a proper review. Not quite.
What can I say about this movie ? Hellblazer it ain't. not even close. But couldn't have said that if it wasn't for the movie itself. Because this is the movie which made me read comics. It added the final straw on what Sin City and 300 started. And when the first comic book one ever picks up is Hellblazer... the world suddenly seems a totally different place. Especially if one reads 234 comics issues in three weeks...
I repeat, the movie is not Hellblazer. It's mostly a watered-down loose adaptation of it. Of the story, I mean.
The comics were one thing, and the movie adds a new dimension to it. Can't help but notice the differences between the two mediums, and how the story works in both of them... while in the comics the story is usually a first-person narration, what Lawrence and Keanu gave us was an apparently silent character, whose inner thoughts could be at best guessed, but never known.
And the fanboys are right, this is not 'their' Constantine. Not exactly the one in the comics. It's rather an alternate version of the character. But while his back story is less grittier than the one given to him by Jamie Delano, he can be even more noble than how Paul Jenkins wrote him... and for whomever read the comics, that says a lot. "that" Constantine would scheme and plan and plot. "this" Constantine , when faced with the inevitable, literally says "to hell with it", and makes his death really count. was it an elaborate con? was it an altruistic impulse ? take your bets ;)
And that's the beauty of it.

contrariated by all the negative comments all over the net about this movie, I ended up reading as many interviews and articles on the subject as possible. and the original screenplay. and I still can't figure how the movie would have looked like if only the studio wouldn't have interfered with the 'creative process' . the only word that comes to mind is 'different'.
the movie is not 'that' bad, after all. it's got the 'cyberpunk' feeling to it; the atmosphere; it's Neuromancer meets "the bridge". but maybe that's the problem. maybe the two were never supposed to meet. not until All Tomorrow's Parties, at least. and that was a different party...
maybe the problem is that there were just too many Johnnys. the one in Gibson's screenplay is already a dangerous melange between Johnny and Case. add to this Keanu's own take on the character. cover with heavy layers of studio executives' and /or producers' ideas about what makes a movie marketable. shake well, stir and add ice.
I still wish there were somewhere a few rolls of film, imprinted with Longo's black-and-white Alphaville-esque version of this movie...
