They should have paid her more for that other film. This is overcompensation for someone else's crimes.

I wish Keanu were still on board.

They should have paid her more for that other film, because it's stupid she got less than the men. But this is overcompensation.

I wish Keanu were still on board.

I wish Keanu were still on board.

me too :|

and yes, it is overcompensation and it's only hurting the chances of the movie actually happening. But then, it looks like the new management isn't too keen on it... and the guy who brought it to Sony left to produce the 50 Shades sequels for Universal... those have a lot more chances of being green lit.
So the way it looks now, Passengers is very likely to become another Shadow 19 :|

hey, at least we got the stories...

Talking about money Salma Hayek said that "The only kind of film where women make more money than men is porno. It’s not funny."

Salma Hayek has appeared at a forum at Cannes to lead a call for greater gender equality in film, saying cinema currently "undermines women’s intelligence". The actor accused Hollywood of "incredible ignorance" about women as she revealed the sexism she has suffered during her career. She also claimed the film industry ignores and misunderstands the tastes of women, and fails to recognise their talents on screen./ source: The Independent

There are a lot of films where Keanu could be 'on board' and he would be great.
I hope that Keanu will appear in a happy-ending romantic film.

20 million dollars for a movie? Sheesh :P
I'm sorry, but I think that actors are overpaid... I'm not underestimating the acting profession, but it's not like they're curing cancer or saving the world, for Christ's sake!
I think this movie won't do very well if they end up with an inflated budget; it'll have to make at least $500-600 million just to break even. It doesn't stand a chance in the age of sequels, prequels, reboots and book adaptations.
Having huge stars in a movie is not always a guarantee the movie will do well. I mean, look what happened to RDJ, arguably the biggest movie star at the moment, and "The Judge" - big stars, big budget, big studio = big flop, both a financial and critical one.
What about Johnny Depp's lack of commercial success outside The Pirates of the Caribbean? The Rum Diary, The Lone Ranger, Transcendence, Mortdecai - all flopped. And I'm pretty sure he didn't work for peanuts on any of those movies.

It's kinda funny how everyone's talking about money yet no one asks whether the two are the right cast for the roles, ya know, acting wise

Show business, indeed.

You're right. They are not good choices. JL is an overrated actress; not saying she's bad or anything like that, but her Oscar was undeserved.

I guess anyone can get an Oscar these days. It used to be a matter of excellence and prestige. How times have changed. For the worse.

From CBS News:

The star-studded film also stars Reese Witherspoon, Keanu Reeves and Rachel McAdams.

Umm...no. No, it doesn't. I feel like the powers that be waited until the original option expired so they wouldn't have to take Keanu as part of the deal.

I agree JL is not worth $20 million. But I think she did deserve an Oscar for SLP, which is a great example of what she's capable of when a director is willing to push her. David O. Russell seems to be a modern-day William Wyler in that respect - actors hate working with him but also love him for helping them win all these awards.

For the record, I'm on board with pretty much anything Chris Pratt does. Yowza.

Same here.

Also, no one mentions now that Passengers is basically Keanu's project just as much as Spaihts'. But just wait. If it flops at the box office (which I do not wish to happen) everyone and their dog will start typing ' Passengers, originally a Keanu Reeves commissioned script' - or something similar.
It's an ugly world. And yet it makes beautiful movies. Sometimes :|

I wasn't impressed by SLP; found it too loud and overdone. The movie, the acting, the JLaw, the Bradley, the de Niro.... (not to mention it romanticized and Hollywoodized the hell outta the original novel. But I digress.) But that's just me, and my taste in movies never matched with the Oscars, so it doesn't really matter...
Got nothing against her or her charmed career, I just don't think she's right for Aurora.
Of course, I can be wrong.

Oh, another thing: due to general superficiality and usual copy/paste journalism of present days, a bunch of articles started mentioning

At one time, when it was a Weinstein Company project with Keanu Reeves and Reese Witherspoon, it was budgeted at a modest USD 35 million.
http://www.financialexpress.com/article/lifestyle/showbiz/jennifer-lawrence-chris-pratt-team-up-for-passengers/86344/

Interestingly, with all the back and forth Passengers has been through over the past year, the film was at one time a project with Weinstein Co. and was set to star Keanu Reeves and Reese Witherspoon. However, the film's budget back then was a mere $35 million compared to the handsome $150 million budget it has grown into.
http://www.inquisitr.com/2182934/jennifer-lawrence-and-chris-pratt-space-romance-passengers-in-pre-production-pratt-gets-raise-thanks-to-jurassic-world/

Why is Passengers, a science-fiction romance that spent an eternity in development hell, finally going into production now? Because... money. The movie's budget is an astonishing $150 million, a huge amount for a film which is essentially a two-hander and which will probably have as much emphasis on the lovey-dovey romantic stuff as it will on robots and rockets and assorted technological whirligigs. It's already been taked about as "Gravity - with a love story." Back then it was going to star Keanu Reeves and Rachel McAdams it would have only cost $35 million. Why the ballooning budget? Well it'll star Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, for one thing.
http://2paragraphs.com/2015/06/jennifer-lawrence-and-chris-pratt-will-sleep-together-for-150-million/

However, back in 2010, Collider reported the following:

http://collider.com/keanu-reeves-passengers-gabrielle-muccino/26738/

New Details on PASSENGERS Starring Keanu Reeves and Directed by Gabrielle Muccino
by Matt Goldberg Posted:May 16th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

As we reported back in January, Keanu Reeves is teaming up with Pursuit of Happyness director Gabrielle Muccino for the sci-fi love story Passengers. Today, with the selling of rights over the film, new details have come to light. With a budget of $90 million, the producers are saying the film is like "Adam & Eve in Space."

Superficial journalism or certain agenda?
You decide.

Yeah, I was kind of forcibly not thinking about it since Keanu was no longer to be acting in it, but the whole thing does seem to have a weird sort of symmetry.

Probably this point's been made before, but it now has MUCH younger actors in the leads. I don't think I like that. I have not (sorry) read the script, but something that originally had mature and experienced actors changing to much younger actors? Does that make sense or does it sound like Hollywood muddling with its most beloved (read: "only") demographic?

@allhailkingjack, what exactly is she capable of that any other Hollywood actress is not? An Oscar worthy performance needs to be EXTRAORDINARY. Not OK, not fine, not good, but UNFORGETTABLE.

When you watch such a performance you cannot possibly think of anyone else playing that role because the actor/actress did such a great job and became one with the character. Think Adrien Brody in The Pianist, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, Charlize Theron in Monster, Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs, Meryl Streep in everything (:P), etc.

JLaw is talented but she's not Oscar material.

Oh, and $20 million?! Puuuhlease! Is that a joke? She has yet to open a super expensive blockbuster that's not a well established franchise with a huge fanbase. The Hunger Games would've been successful with or without her. Just like Twilight, just like Harry Potter, just like (oh, God :() 50 Shades of Gray. Is Dakota Johnson a megastar then? Does she deserve a huge paycheck as well?

/sarcasm on/ Sure, let's be fair and give her 20 million dollars too, because SHE is the reason why the first installment in the trilogy became one of the biggest box office successes of the year. Yeah, I really see no other explanation. /sarcasm off/

I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but I'm a little frustrated with the current state in the movie industry. :/

Well, they don't give Oscars because that person is the best actor who's ever been in a movie, or because no one else in Hollywood could've done as well or better in that role. They give them because of what that one person did with that one role. Speaking for myself, I saw her display remarkable - even astonishing - depths of feeling in SLP. I thought it was some of the finest acting I've seen in years. I've only seen the occasional flash of similar greatness in her Hunger Games portrayal. And I do agree the franchise would've taken off with any one of a dozen other actresses in the role.

And yeah, like I said, she's not worth $20M no matter how good I think she was in SLP. But as Anakin pointed out, her Passengers salary is not about her, it's about the fact that her agent completely bungled her American Hustle negotiations and wants to give the appearance of having learned from his or her mistake.

@MmeRenard - I can understand ; technically, Passengers is no longer a Keanu Reeves movie.
But I love that script, and the story, and I'm the kind of person/reader/audience who needs closure, dammit :|
So I'll follow the whole saga to the end. Just like I'm keeping an eye on the Adam Jones movie. The bittersweet taste of imagining what could have been and then comparing that with the final cut (when that time comes)...
Call it a personal quirk :D

LucaM, I can somehow relate to the concept of personal quirks.

Do you think that the script was written with older characters in mind? I know that John Wick was supposed to be a character maybe 10 years older, but the writer re-imagined it with Keanu.

Not really; in the script, Jim is 38 and Aurora is 29.
Pratt is 35 and Lawrence is 25. From this pov, Keanu's age could have been an issue...
My 'problem' with casting Pratt is that I think he's lacking the depth required to play Jim. Since it won't be Keanu, I'd rather see Hiddleston playing Jim. Not that anyone was asking ;)
And I think Rosamund Pike would be a great Aurora, even though she's 36. Again, not that anyone was asking ;)

It looks like the only thing Sony is interested in is box office. Which, after all, is inevitable: they're a big studio...
I wish and hope the movie will turn out ok; I love the story and I hope it will be told right. But my age ;) and life experience made me skeptical about that ;)

oh well. we'll see.

yes, @LucaM, maybe the movie could be good and at least I like J.Lawrence.

But to be honest I like much more persons since I've been watching more Keanu during the last years and for sure DiCaprio is one of those whom I didn't like earlier (it started with Inception).

LucaM, and not only Keanu's "age" (pfffft) - Reese Witherspoon is a lot older than 29.

When I see "JLaw" I think, not surprisingly "Jude Law." I don't dislike Jennifer Lawrence other than a certain pouty Hayden Christensen (anybody remember him?) quality. Probably uncharitable to say that I think she's a better actor than he is, and it wasn't fair to put him with a ferocious actress like Natalie Portman.
But I digress.

I don't remember anyone being "ferocious" in those awful Star Wars prequels. Everyone had the energy of a dead frog, which is something I blame Lucas for.

As for Passengers, I honestly never really liked the script, but I was excited because Keanu was supposed to be in it, and I support everything he does.

It'll be like Gravity minus the timers, the eeny, meeny, miny, moe, and the heavy breathing.
