German blu-ray cover art for "Henry's Crime".

Did whoever designed that cover even watch the movie ?

That cover is totally misleading.

Henry never carried a gun. He even mentions he doesn't want to use them because someone might get hurt.

Also, the title The Diva and the Criminal suggests a whole other type of movie. The Diva and the Tollbooth Collector would have been much better. :-)

Here's another review / article on Henry's Crime - from The Japan Times Online.

... some things never change indeed :(

In fact, Reeves would look just right next to James Stewart or a similar low-temperature guy. YES HE WOULD.

Predictably, there's a lot of digging dirt and double-crossing going on in this murky tunnel, and the overall ambience is so retro it takes you right back to the Hollywood studio pictures of, oh, the 1950s or so.
... which was exactly,oh, the very intention of the film in the first place.

oh well. what would we do without fishes?

Low-temperature guy? Sorry, but Keanu makes Jimmy Stewart look like a department store mannequin. Even when he's very still and silent, there's all kinds of things going on in there.

Possibly, I'm the only one who finds it unsatisfactory. So much, IMO, is left up in the air. Does she meet up with him later on? Does he get arrested or does he successfully evade the fuzz? Does the baddie blab? I jumped in on a conversation regarding just this equivocal feel (for me) on IMDB, which, now that I think on it, was stupid of me. What do y'all think? (About the ending, not about my stupidity-problem.) :-)

From the script, after the part where they cut off in the movie:

FADE UP ON :

EXT. THE LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE - DAY
...which become REAL BLOSSOMS on a CHERRY TREE, widening
to reveal an orchard, the most beautiful you’ve ever
seen.

A STONE FARM HOUSE
Frank (the black security guard) sits at a table outside in the garden. He pours
himself a Pernod. He looks happy as a clam.

A CAT jumps in his lap, purring.

FRANK
Hello miou-miou.

He looks out at the lush valley below. Smiles.

CUT TO :

THE SOUND OF A CRYING BABY
INT. PRIVATE DELIVERY ROOM, SOMEWHERE IN NEW MEXICO -
DAWN

A state of the art hospital room. No expense has been
spared. A shaky image of DEB’s face as JOE frames the
video camera. (Henry's ex-wife and the guy she ended up with)

THE BABY comes into view now. It’s beautiful. And
screaming its little lungs out.

JOE (O.S.)
It’s a girl!!!

DEBBIE
A girl.

A NURSE hands the baby to Debbie. Joe looks on, tears
stream down his face.

CUT TO :

EXT. FORT LAUDERDALE - DAY

We follow A MAILMAN past a row of palm trees as he enters
a traditional-looking BARBER SHOP : “MAX’S - A PLACE FOR
GROOMING”

INT. MAX’S BARBER SHOP - CONTINUOUS

The Mailman hands a few letters to the pretty front desk
GIRL. Max, his back to us, finishes a shave, talking his
customer’s ear off.

MAX
Time is a medium of exchange. You can buy
things with it. Education. Self-respect.
You can even figure out your dream.

The Guy nods. Max turns. We see him now. He’s super tan.

He pulls the sheet off his client.

MAX (CONT’D)
You’re done. Next!

Another YOUNG CUSTOMER sits down. There’s a few of them
waiting their turn, enjoying Max’s schtick.

The front desk girl hands Max the mail.

CLOSE ON A POSTCARD : ‘Our dream is our truth is our
destiny...Love H... xx’

Max smiles. Flips over the postcard and only now when he
pins it above the mirror do we finally see what it is --
an image of THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN.

MAX (CONT’D)
So tell me, Javier. What’s your dream?

THE SOUND OF BREATHING

Fade up on : what looks like the AFRICAN BUSH.

It’s hot. There are insects buzzing around and it doesn’t
look like rain’s landed anywhere near here in years.
A HAND reaches out for another HAND, helping someone over
the final step.

REVEAL HENRY AND JULIE

Sitting right below the Hollywood sign now...

Looking down on the whole basin of Los Angeles. She hands
him a bottle of water. He drinks.

JULIE
Look. You can see the ocean.

He puts his arm around her.

HENRY
‘Your brother says I’m an upstart, a
money grubber...but I don’t care a bit.’

She laughs...they kiss in the sun for a while...

FADE TO BLACK

CREDITS START TO ROLL...

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - BUFFALO - DAY

EDDIE VIBES (the guy they left tied up) is being questioned by the unseen DETECTIVE.

DETECTIVE (O.S.)
I’m only going to ask you one more time,
Eddie. Who was it? Who helped you?

EDDIE
I told you before. Dopey. Sleepy. Happy
and Doc --

WHAACK! The slap knocks Eddie to the ground. He’s under
the table now, his face crushed by the Detective’s BOOT :

DETECTIVE (O.S.)
You know what you are Vibes? A liar, a
cheat, a thief and a loser.

He presses his boot down harder ON EDDIE’S FACE :

EDDIE
I may be all those things but one thing
I’m not...is a rat.

Eddie smiles. His face squashed sideways like that, it’s
a pretty strange kind of smile...

the end.

Personally, I prefer the ending of the final version. Money were in the car, Eddie was in the tunnel, tied up, Henry was on the stage, finally committing to his true dream, Julie said 'yes' (after her own fashion). Curtain falls.

Didn't really need to know what happens to all of them afterwards, if they really 'make it' or not. When reading the draft, I thought 'that's too much of a Hwood ending'.
Besides, since they took out the 'your dream is your truth is your destiny' line from the Max scenes, the postcard wouldn't have made much sense...

But then, that's just me.

'that's too much of a Hwood ending'.

...literally. :D

I still wish they'd left that quote in. your dreams is your truth is your destiny.

Thanks, Anakin, for posting that. The script really does tie it all up in a bright red bow, doesn't it? :-) Though I disbelieve the Eddie bit; he's way too self-serving *not* to rat Henry out, if it would save his own ass.

It's not that I needed a Hollywood ending (literally!), but some resolution would've been preferable to none, for me. It just feels...unfinished.

Julie said 'yes' (after her own fashion)

Afraid I can't quite see her final words in the film in the same way. :-)

'the Eddie bit' - was most probably meant as poetic justice ;) :)
but it doesn't hold water; the police wouldn't need Eddie's deposition, all clues point in bright neon arrow signs to the real culprits :) I suppose it's one of the reasons why that scene was cut.

Afraid I can't quite see her final words in the film in the same way. :-)

well, I do :)

And just like FM everybody gets what they needed/deserved in the end. I think also the same for POP. I will have to give it some thought (or maybe not) but could it be that ALL his movies resolve that way? Just throwing it out there.

How is that we've not discussed the morning sex in HC?
That look when he first awakens is so classically Keanu. The reaction when Julie makes the, uh, connection is pretty clear to me in a very subtle and not overtly pornographic way. Oh yeah that is a 'good morning' and I enjoyed it vicariously. I calls it like I sees it. :)

... after giving it some thought... I guess they do...
(even if apparently FM had a different darker ending that was changed due to studio/producer pressure - can't remember which exactly :/)
