Forum Posts: 160 Comments: 3 Reviews: 0 | Just got back from the screening at Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center. It's a beautiful (pretty new) theater, smallish, but was packed with folks. Great acoustics; not too live, not too dead. This impressed itself on me when the movie started and KR's voice narrated the opening.
Anyway, the movie is, of course, very informative. The general take away for me was that, of the folks interviewed in the film (they'd interviewed about 140 but edited down to about half for the movie), the feelings about digital film were fairly positive. EXCEPT for one dude (forgive me, I didn't make note of his name) who said something along the lines of the fact that digital film is so cheap and easy to work that the industry would become (is becoming?) flooded with crap (I'm paraphrasing, but that was totally the gist of his attitude) and that there would no longer be any "taste-makers" keeping the ick out of our sacrosanct (my word, not his) theaters. The thought I had when I heard that was what Keanu expressed aloud: "Wow!" This kind of sentiment really irks me, personally, as it's prevalent in the publishing industry and, as an unagented writer who's striking out finding folks willing to take a chance on her work, I'm seriously considering self-publishing. But there's a huge stigma attached to works that weren't published traditionally, with a lot of blah blah blah about agents and editors being the "gatekeepers" of publishing and keeping the crap off our shelves. Grrr...as if plenty of crap didn't make it to bookstores (or now Amazon) simply because it was believed to be of commercial value. GAH! Sorry about the rant. I asked Kenneally about that during the Q&A, because that one guy was the only one offering such an opinion in Side by Side. He politely disagreed strongly with the idea and firmly supported the "democratization" of film-making, for which I applaud him. Some chicks seated behind me complained to themselves that the film was too technical. As I'm not really in the know about this stuff, there were definitely things that went totally over my head. But I did learn quite a bit and there were many enjoyable moments in it, like when this little kid asks Keanu about the hand scene in the Matrix and he explains it. The kid's looking at him solemnly throughout the explanation, then when Keanu's done, breaks into this big smile that drew "AWs" out of the audience. Very sweet moment. I'm trying to insert the one pic I managed to snap, though I'm not altogether sure how to go about it and may have to edit this post a few times to get it right (if I can, at all).
HEY, that totally WORKED! Quelle surprise! Keneally's the fella on the left. Oh yeah; a DVD release is in the works, he thinks in the fall.

Forum Posts: 4842 Comments: 381 Reviews: 13 | Sephonae - many thanks for asking that question :) It's good news :) And even more thanks for posting your review. Yes, the documentary is a bit too technical for the 'layperson', but then, people got too used to have everything explained, CSI style. Go do your own research, people. Might learn something in the process ;) And please don't get me started on 'taste-makers' and the politics of the publishing houses nowadays. I've lost any shred of respect for a publishing industry that printed Twilight and its fanfic (50 Shades of Shite).

Forum Posts: 4842 Comments: 381 Reviews: 13 | Yeah, who cares? Permanent present. What is that constant consuming of the image? I’m genuinely curious. That’s part of the digital story. It might be the digital story. The permanent present, get it now, and then on to the next thing. Are you experiencing or are you watching, and is there a difference? What do you let in? And when it’s all catered to your culture and your taste — I don’t know. Oy! We could talk about this forever.
... damn good questions, K.
