One of the ways to view Side By Side. Just throwing it out there.

Funny that in a film about cinematography the most stand out aspect is the editing. It flows in a way few documentaries could ever hope to, managing to follow a thematic track all the way to the end, while also keeping all the interviews engaging and distinct.

All that really can stand out in a documentary is editing. Usually. At least in this style of a doc. Otherwise, it would take you out of that reality and make you focus less on the topic being confronted; maybe even put you in awe, rather than inform you

A very fine, and educational, documentary. It is always nice to see professionals at work. It kept me awake - woke me up, actually - and interested the whole way through; the little addition at the end about archiving was enjoyable.
The whole movie offers equally good arguments for each side of everything (minus special effects, because I personally think CGI has never looked good; but going off on fx would have gotten too off-topic).

David Lynch is right with his "everyone and their little brother has a piece of paper" analogy. With so many movies being made, I think our standards are lowering, or rather, adjusting to new (other) planes, and the market is just getting oversaturated. While technology and digital is getting better and providing greater quality, the people who are using it is -- well, everyone. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it does more bad than good, I think. And it's aggravating that they're spending all this money and time on creating all this new technology only to shoot, pardon my language, shittier films

In the end, it's funny, and nice, that there was at least one thing everyone could agree on: digital projecting is a plus.

Digital won't kill good films, either. But it might help us diversify our taste ;)

No true movie junkie is going to want to miss Side by Side. In case you haven't noticed, digital capture and projection are slowly sending old-fashioned celluloid into the archives. What does it mean for movies? Keanu Reeves, making an astute and witty interviewer in Chris Kenneally's vital film, asks many of our best directors where they stand in the digital revolution. Their answers might surprise you. Steven Soderbergh and David Lynch are eager converts, while Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese feel a loss. The film clips, side by side, are revelatory. Jump in.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – Monday, September 24, 5 p.m. PT is the deadline for filmmakers to submit documentary features to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration for the 85th Academy Awards®.

To be eligible, the documentaries must complete seven-day commercial runs in both Los Angeles County and the Borough of Manhattan in New York between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2012. Films completing their qualifying runs after September 24 must still complete and submit all paperwork, including legal contracts, by the deadline.

Each completed entry form must be accompanied by supporting materials, including 200 DVD copies of the film without trailers or other extraneous materials, an English-language synopsis of the film, a list of film credits and proof of seven-day qualifying exhibitions.

Films that, in any version, receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release will not be eligible for Academy Awards.
