Henry’s real crime, of course, isn’t robbing the bank but instead wasting most of his adult life by embracing a paralytic existence that halted the potential for any emotional growth. Reeves ably portrays a man slowly discovering the ability to be present in his own life, but Caan and particularly Farmiga steal the show as they both fill each frame they’re in with enough presence and thespian instinct to forgive some of the film’s most blatantly convoluted plot devices. ... at least this reviewer got something right...

Like maybe after wasting most of her adult life that halts the potential for any emotional growth? Just sayin...

“This is a guy who was kind of on this crossroads, this netherworld of his life, who through the course of the story gets activated,” the 46-year-old actor said, “and then activates everyone around him.”

Remember how I theorized some time ago that James Caan didn't appear to like Keanu all that much? Well, in this interview Keanu says so straight out. I wonder what it was about Our Man that rubbed Caan the wrong way. Any theories? http://www.movieweb.com/movie/henrys-crime/exclusive-keanu-reeves-interview

that he's everything Caan is not? that effin' Keanu Reeves managed to have a constant career, get his pet project made and that he, the great Caan has to do advertising for Reeves' movie while Caan's own movie ( filmed, of ALL possible locations, in Buffalo, NY ) did poorly at the box office and was poorly received by the critics?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Forum Posts: 4842 Comments: 381 Reviews: 13 | another thing : I remember Reeves described Caan once as ' a force of nature'. well, Reeves can be that too ; albeit under a different form. So I guess two forces of nature kind of clashed on that set. Two Alpha males. that couldn't possibly have gone well ;)

AND I totally agree with you about Caan. Keanu flat out called him a wiseguy and a piece of work although he said he meant it kindly. It was the radio interview where Keanu was a little too overly apologetic, about not having had dinners together, that was revealing. He wants Caan not to go away mad...just to go away. As always, the people that teach us most about compassion are the ones we find the most difficult.

http://www.movieweb.com/movie/henrys-crime/exclusive-james-caan-interview I tend to agree with him on one thing, though. there was more to the Max character in the first chapter (more scenes in jail, conversations between him and Henry) that got cut out. pity. in my version of the movie ;) those should have stayed.

on the other hand, I'm glad they cut the ending the way they did. well. one can't have it all. ( even if Henry could ;) )

It's truly fascinating to watch Our Man's mannerisms and facial expressions -- especially the intensity of his gaze when he's looking at someone he's having a conversation with. It must be a bit unnerving being the other person and having Keanu's eyes on them with such total attention.

Reeves, who shepherded this little film through script development and production (see the accompanying article for a history of his involvement with shooting in Buffalo), admits they weren’t out to change the world with it. “I can’t say it’s inspirational, but [hopefully] when you come out of the theater, you have a little lift,” Reeves says. “If there are things that we’re not happy about or things that are frustrating to us, we can try and negotiate that once we leave. Or just go have sex.” exactly ;) on the other hand, he might be a candidate for the king of perfectionism ;) Keanu was extremely involved. He tried to get into the rhythm of the city. He was interested in the people and the cadence, quizzed me on my accent. [...] “So often scouts come in and just go through the motions, but here they brought the whole team in: the director, the cinematographer, a staff of people. We had a people mover to move them around the city. It was probably one of the largest scout crews I’ve encountered, and one of the longest.” Unlike some films that seem to care nothing about local color (a certain Jim Carrey movie that was set in Buffalo but filmed in, of all places, San Diego comes to mind), Henry’s Crime took pains to get the local color right. “There are productions that just want to get it done, put it on fast forward and trudge through. Then there are others like this one that want to get the local flavor, get streets names, restaurant names. In one of the scenes there was a sign [in the shot] for a local realtor, and they were more interested in getting clearance for that than in removing it.”
