A review which gets almost everything right... but confuses emoting with scenery chewing and/or overacting.

Forum Posts: 4842 Comments: 381 Reviews: 13 | indeed. thank you so much for sharing the link.
It's the most in-depth review I've read so far. It deciphers the subtext beautifully. The reviewer seems to have missed the clue given by the 'Shibumi' book. The way I interpret it, it tells us that everything which follows is not to be taken completely seriously, but as a parody/satire, just the way Shibumi was written. But a Freudian dream? Don't think so. Also, there are a few inaccuracies in this review....

Forum Posts: 1101 Comments: 48 Reviews: 0 | I agree, the dream idea is stretching things quite a lot, but at least she got the archetypal symbology. Keanu is more than a pretty face. Duh. There's subtext.
Some things in the film are a specific reference for those of us who get it - Shibumi probably being the most obvious. And yes, some inaccuracies, but not everyone is as

ADMIN Forum Posts: 3075 Comments: 405 Reviews: 1 | Excellent observation and literary analysis aside,
lolwut. srsly, what universe is this person living in, where the American film market is apparently saturated with movies about traditionally-feminine black lesbians, and making films about straight white men is 'political sabotage'?

Forum Posts: 1101 Comments: 48 Reviews: 0 | Well, yes, there's that. Shucks, all you have to do is to look at our sorry excuse for a Congress to see how "anti-white-heterosexual male" bias is rampant in America. Someone otherwise intelligent has been listening to a bit too much of Fox "News." And while "non-domesticated" seems to apply quite well to the actor, it ironically doesn't apply to John Wick, who gives up his job for the woman he loves, that being a very significant plot point. Let's not get into the whole thing of "he really isn't that entirely white" again. I'm just saying that I find it refreshing to see a review that comments upon the rich mythology and texture of the film and not just "this kicks ass!!!" (although it does most definitely kick ass). I don't know that she says much about Keanu as an actor in this, but the film only and obviously works as well as it does because of Keanu. I don't think of another actor who would have conveyed Wick's personality and emotion nearly as well as Keanu.

Forum Posts: 247 Comments: 8 Reviews: 0 | Thanks MmeRenard! Fascinating to read an analysis that scrapes off the surface and views the DETAILS! In many interviews, he spoke about a lot of references from varied mythologies and interesting takes and parodies on existing rules of justice and revenge tales. Even if I don't exactly agree on everything written in the blog, as some of the interpretations seem little far fetched to me, it is still a very thought provoking one, especially for those who have not noticed many or any of the references. I can't think of anyone else capable of carrying silently emotional sequences with so much potency and effect. Never have and never will.

Forum Posts: 1101 Comments: 48 Reviews: 0 | Thanks, Neaura. People who say he's not emoting are not looking at his eyes (which just makes me go "what the HECK?" because they are beautiful). There is so much there. I agree with you completely about silent emotional sequences. Very well said!

Forum Posts: 247 Comments: 8 Reviews: 0 | :-) :-) no one else takes 'silence speaks more than words' more seriously. Just wish people spend a little time observing but I guess it's too much to ask in today's world. It takes quite a bit of talent and audacity to opt this approach because, as it has been well established now, most people misconstrue it as non-emoting when in reality a lot more is being conveyed with a lot less. Gives your mind and heart a lot of room to breathe and take in what needs to be taken in. No traffic jams there.
16 years, never disappointed either :-) and I'm pretty sure I won't be in future too. Growing up has been wonderful!

yep yep. For an otherwise intelligent and very perceptive review, it's odd how the main message she got out of that seems to be 'white man is MACHO and won't let evil liberals keep him down!!!' which is a view I generally hear from men, not women. I read a little more of her blog, and it's disturbing how she's evidently intelligent and yet, as you said, seems to have been spending too much time watching Fox News. She said she watched Interstellar hoping that it would be a critique of the 'pro-socialist' Gravity... "to help save humanity from the suffocating conditions the socialists have created on earth. ... THIS IS THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE MOVIE" I don't even... Who does that? Who watches a space movie wondering if it's trying to impart a pro-capitalism or pro-socialism message? And it's particularly baffling that she seems avidly anti-socialism, especially since she claims it's in the name of Christianity, when Jesus was... basically a gigantic socialist. The American Christian Right continues to deeply confuse me, especially when they hold as inviolable tenets of their faith things that are either nowhere in Christianity or outrightly contradict it. "Socialism has a way of "cleaning up" whatever it doesn't like, including history textbooks, or an entire population of people the "party" deems undesirable, whether those be Jews or whites." ...okAY I am getting off this blog before I get more disturbed. or was there a holocaust against white people that somehow escaped my attention?
this is a good thing. | ||

yep. During Stalin's time in the USSR. http://www.ukemonde.com/genocide/margolisholocaust.html Also, what happened between the Serbs and the Croats during the Yugoslav wars pretty much qualifies as such, although at a smaller scale... eh. history.

Though it doesn't seem to have targetted white people for being white and thus 'undesirable' (unlike how Hitler and co targetted Jews for being Jews), so the analogy doesn't quite fit whatever the blog writer was trying to say, if she was indeed referencing that. |
