The subtleness of John's character is amazing.

... it is.

It's just disturbingly brilliant.

YES. :)

I'm actually directing people towards this film who don't believe Keanu is a good actor. He really does an absolutely amazing job in it, I mean call me crazy but I feel it's definitely Oscar-worthy. For me, it's his best work yet.

Just so we're clear here...I have viewed that movie a LOT. And I totally agree with your take on it. I have occasionally heard fans saying they think Reeves himself has aspergers syndrome but, as usual, attempts to define him fall so very short.

But now I feel that John suffers from a form of Autism or Aspergers, after somebody here pointed out the "medication" line on the check his mother sends to him.

There's no medication for autism / Asperger's, though. (according to various people and one of my psychiatrists I very likely have Asperger's, and I have a few friends who are confirmed cases, and there's no medication for it because it's not a disease, just a difference in brain wiring.)

Well, we don't see John actually taking any medication per se. So I guess that line is meant more as a metaphor. John's self-imposed 'medication' is living alone, away from his family... avoiding to see the disappointment in their eyes...
or at least that's how I see it.

There's behavioural medication for things like Autism, that sort of "calm" the brain down. I don't agree with them, but they do exist and I've had friends that have had to take them. That's what I thought maybe the medication was for? But I really like your view too, Luca! In a metaphorical sense....hmm, I hadn't thought of that before!

I think that's for ADD/ADHD, which sometimes/often co-exists with autism - one of my friends had both, and was on medication for the ADD.

^ Ah, that's what I was thinking of! My mistake. But that's what I assumed the "medication" money could've been for...I really do like the other reading of it in a more "metaphorical" sense though, I wish I had thought of that!

I also just watched that video the director posted last year of the workings behind the film...I liked the mention of the vignettes of Violet in the apartment between John discovering the camera, because those were some of my favourite moments too! Especially Violet with the toast, and her trying to pick out her outfit.

I thought the medication was anti-depressants...? Not mentioned in the film, but seemed pretty obvious to me.

on the check from John's mother, after 'medication' she also drew a smiley.
it means it's their private joke, and not supposed to be taken literally.

in this movie, nothing is what it looks like at a first glance...

^ Ah but see, I didn't take it like that all! Based on her phonecalls/messages for him, I thought the smiley face was more an offering of "peace" as in; "You're my son, I love you but I understand you need your space and you're figuring things out. Here's some cash to help you" kind of thing.

God, see this is why I love this film!!

^ Exactly! There is this other film I watched in one of my classes at Uni (last year of Fine Arts), called "Cat Soup" and it's this extremely odd animated story told through anime-styled cats. When the movie was over, everybody had different opinions on what happened to the characters. Some said the main character died in the first few minutes, and therefore the story was about crossing over into the afterlife. I instantly thought it was about depression, and finding yourself again after it. It really does depend on what you've been through in life, and how you see things through the lenses you've chosen to wear.

Fascinating stuff!

I thought the smiley face was to take the sting out of the medication remark.

It's pretty brilliant how the subject of mental illness is mentioned with great subtlety, I think the lack of specific diagnosis for any of the characters is very intentional - and Keanu's performance of that is beautifully understated. Dude is indifferent about a cupcake, that HAS to be in DSM-5 somewhere, doesn't it?
