Really?
I guess that makes sense, E! Must have just now figured out that "E! For egregious!" might not have been a compliment.

My prayers to the universe were heard and acted upon!
Keanu will be on the Colbert Report December 18th. I can only imagine what will transpire but I know Stephen will make much of the One.

(viewable in many languages btw).

So, I'm back from my first 47 Ronin viewing.

To start with, the screening was far from sold out. There were only 21 people in the theatre. Now that might be because of the starting time (5:50 PM) or because every promotional thing I've seen (posters, etc.) mentions that the movie is in theaters December 26th (I only found out there was a screening today, because I was checking if I could already reserve a ticket for the 26th), but I still think it is a low turnout.

On to the movie itself.

Visuals : Stunning, very colourful. Sets and environments are great. Definitely worth seeing it on the big screen. Personally I didn't think the 3D added much to the experience, but I think that for basically every 3D movie.

Performances : The male performances were good, but the characters fell a bit flat. For me the females stole the show, especially Rinko Kikuchi, who seemed to really enjoy playing the evil witch.

Story : Already knew the basic story, so no real surprises there. I've seen the 1962 version of 47 Ronin before and compared to that it definitely felt very westernized (even if they kept the non-Hollywood ending).

Keanu : Good performance, felt he captured Kai's essence rather well (I strongly disagree with the one guy in the audience who at the end of the movie said they should have taken a different actor). Kai is more of a supporting character really, but we do get some nice close-ups of him. If you're anything like me, that is cry easily, you might want to take a handkerchief.

All in all I really enjoyed it and definitely will be seeing it again.

Thanks for sharing :)
In my country the premiere is on the 27th, but usually there are 'pre-screening' two days in advance.... but even then, I can't book the ticket online until next Tuesday :(

Thanks for sharing your review Joke. In the US movie goers are like sheep. The majority go to movies on Friday and Saturday nights. It usually guarantees I can avoid the crowds (and the germs) by going to matinees or late shows on the other days of the week.
After the deluge of press for Japan I was sure there would be something like that here. The enigma prevails...

Or maybe that's when people have time off?

I am not a sheep. I need to be at work at 6am during the week, and am asleep by 10 pm on week nights. For what it's worth, I don't have an opportunity to go on Christmas Day, and I do think that it is a sort of weird release date for action/ adventure. No, I don't think it's a war on Christmas :-)

Another thing I noticed is that some parts of the movie are obviously edited out. This should be no surprise considering its history. I think the movie as envisioned must have been a lot longer than the current version, but the studio wanted it cut to "normal" length.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

For example when Oishi is thrown into the pit to humiliate him and Kai is sold into slavery there is an almost immediate cut to 1 year later. You don't see any humiliation being done to Oishi and no footage of what happens to Kai that makes him lose his mind.

Another example is on the Dutch island. You see actor Yorick van Wageningen for literally about 2 seconds. If you blink you miss him. Might as well have chosen an extra instead of a real actor. I think originally there must have been some negotiation scene between his character (Kapitan) and Oishi about freeing Kai. Now you see Oishi arrive, tell the tattoo guy he is looking for a halfbreed, and the next thing Oishi is fighting Kai. No explanation why, all rather abrupt.

I think someone/Keanu realizes that there's a problem with the marketing of Ronin. In every interview I see, after they show a clip, which is always of fighting, he emphasizes that it's also a love story with a princess. Gotta get those women in the seats!
