Forum Posts: 1101 Comments: 48 Reviews: 0 | Lindawn, exactly what I felt! So beautiful! Arya, I agree entirely. The criticism I'm seeing kind if makes the point of the film - "he's an outsider! Lower caste! He should not meddle in the affairs of his betters!" That criticism says far more about those making it than it does about the film. To suggest that Kai is "leading" the ronin is ridiculous, it is perfectly clear that Oishii is their leader, and they need Kai's help. I want to see every single film of Hiroyuki Sanada, he is wonderful.
I would go so far as to predict that those who have already written this film off as some sort of loss are going to be very, very wrong. Many, many people are going to love this movie, for a long time. I really hope that I'm right, I think that I will be. (One other little thing, Kai in nature, quiet and unobtrusive, hanging back, inconspicuous - he's sort of like one of them Rangers, dangerous folk you know, they call that one Strider. Loved Viggo's portrayal of Aragorn, have always thought that Keanu would have been amazing. I now return you to your regular programming...end rant.) Some people who didn't like the film doubtless wanted the ending where all the right asses get kicked and all the good guys live happily ever after (which I actually think is the "end"). Some people don't like any suggestion of interracial/intercultural understanding, harmony, cooperation. Some people don't like anyone different, oh I already said that...

Forum Posts: 380 Comments: 1 Reviews: 0 | MmeRenard, I would like to recommend Tasogare Seibei (2002) aka The Twilight Samurai to you. Hiroyuki Sanada is very good in that.
If you also want to see Tadanobu Asano again, in a very different role in a rather strange movie, I recommend Cha no aji (2004) aka The Taste of Tea.

Forum Posts: 4842 Comments: 381 Reviews: 13 | So basically the guy is upset that he has to pay to see the movie and instead is asking for everyone to send in their opinions so he can write the review for the Blu-Ray just by compiling their posts and not bothering to open the DVD case?
Sorry, not doing his work for him.

Forum Posts: 1101 Comments: 48 Reviews: 0 | Wow, I am no financial wizard but I find it hard, nay impossible, to understand how a film that reportedly cost around $175 million could be "expected" (on day 3 of its US release) to lose $175 million. That seems a bit far-fetched if not premature. Does this nonsense consider worldwide earnings or just US earnings? I may be paranoid, but it sure seems that there are people who are awfully eager to see this film fail. It succeeds brilliantly as a work of art, no one is going to take that away. I think those of us who love the film have some responsibility to get the word out that people should ignore the critics and the haters and just go and see it.

Forum Posts: 777 Comments: 3 Reviews: 0 | :) I stared to guess how the story looks like. A dragon reminds me about 'Neverending story' but it was a completely different plot and that creature was/looked more friendly than the one in the trailer. Also as far as I remeber the samurai stories are more about fighting and honour rather than love. There are other reflections and thoughts but soon I am going to see it myself. For sure it will be a nice surprise.

Forum Posts: 2836 Comments: 74 Reviews: 11 | @Christine So excited for you all seeing it the first time! But my truth is that I am watching so much for detail, the first time, my second viewing is more enjoyable. I think it's part of knowing way to much about the movie in the first place :)

Forum Posts: 2836 Comments: 74 Reviews: 11 | After years of delays and reshoots, Universal’s 47 Ronin finally opened on domestic shores. With $3.4m yesterday, the Keanu Reeves samurai film has earned $14.1m since debuting with $7.1m on Christmas day and should end the frame with $21m. On one hand, that’s a terrible number for a $175m picture. On the other hand, it just shows that Keanu Reeves has genuine drawing power, as he pulled off a $20m debut for a film that had absolutely nothing going for it. No other stars, no buzz, limited advertising, poor reviews, a famously troubled production history, and yet it still opened with $20m.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2013/12/28/friday-box-office-frozen-hobbit-2-battle-over-christmas-weekend/ Forbes thinks a movie with an amazing story that Keanu had the wisdom to sign on to, has nothing going for it? BUT all in all it's a slightly more fair assessment. I say fuck Forbes and all their bean counters.

Forum Posts: 1101 Comments: 48 Reviews: 0 | Oh how quickly the media will now cover their butts as it becomes more clear by the day that the rumors of the film's demise have been egregiously exaggerated, if not to say premature.
And I like Marvel movies very much, but that does not mean that every film that doesn't make back its total cost in the first day is a failure. For what it's worth, I thought the first Hobbit movie sucked and was a disappointingly lousy excuse to use lots of CGI "look, big rock guys can come right out of a mountain and spend half an hour throwing boulders at each other, while the cast dodges and says 'eek.' " I have no intentions of seeing Smaug until I can get it on Netflix. As much as I admire Martin Scorsese, which is to say infinitely, I am not interested in hearing another peep about perverse Wall Street jackasses laughing as they do violence to the economy. Nope, I will blissfully stick with 47 Ronin, thank you.
