Spanish cinema theater chain does not show 47 Ronin due to high fees required by Universal.

LIke it or not, this is the film from 2014, along with Upstream Colors, and WWZ, that goes into the archives. Not Her, not Hustle, and not the rest of the preprogrammed good-evil flicks that suffuse the blockbuster (anybody seen the year’s blanched fare: IM3, Man of Steel, Pacific Rim? preplanned explosions by numbers) Why? Because it’s saying something new and saying it visually. Anybody remember the reviews for Blade Runner or The Thing? They were deadly-panned, the acting was savaged, the meaning of the film ignored and lost in a hatred: piñata-by-review. The mood of both films: downers. And that’s what’s here, an antithetical blockbuster, trying to rip us out of the emotional desert that Marvel and DC and Peter Jackson have led us to. Now generations later we’ve revised our views of Blade Runner and The Thing (both are now called masterpieces), and very likely, Ronin’s far more complex ideas of roles and rules and duels will make it the one we have to watch a few more times to absorb. I enjoyed Stuart Baird’s 47 Ronin, I probably would have loved Rinsch’s version.

Funny, the Variety "review" (or rather apology for Universal's treatment of the film) has nothing at all to do with what I see on the screen. My, doesn't Hollywood love to hate this film!

Don't care, I love it. I think it's much, much better than the Hobbit, and if I see Smaug at all it will be at home.

@MmeRenard, that Variety "review" really got to my nerves and it was so unfair once I saw the film on the wide screen. actually, i have lost interest watching other films, i only watch films if keanu is there. except if a film is really really exceptional...on the other hand, i also prefer watching documentaries on travels, astronomy, nature, etc. i am no longer interested in watching other actors except keanu. because for me, i wanted to know why he chose that role, why he was attracted to the theme of the story, etc.

that explains a few things :|

If we're patient enough (and I've learned to be) we might get to find out the truth about the production of 47 Ronin. Even if it takes a few lifetimes ;)

Never thought of myself as especially dense, but what does it explain? Perhaps it's Hollywood logic.

Well, the film might be getting bad reviews from critics, but the comments from movie goers are very favorable. And I just saw the box office take to date, it is over 100 million and there are still about 6 or 7 markets to open in. 47 Ronin is going to easily make over 200 million and I'd even go so far to say 250 m. Universal is not going to take a hit on this film like they thought, - which is due to the bad reviews. All the negative nitpicking of the film by said critics, was completely overblown. I saw the film and it was great. Apparently no one knows the reason why this ancient conflict happened. So, using fantasy as an element, characterized in Japanese culture, which seamlessly integrates with the historical drama, creating a unified story, that works on so many levels. Everything embodied Japanese culture, from the speech, the Oscar worthy set designs and costumes, the right amount of CGI and the overall epic feel of the film. The only complaint is that there is not enough character development of the 47 or the relationship that blossomed between Kai and the princess. Another 20 minutes could have done this justice. I don't know why universal stuck their nose in it while Carl was working, but I'd like to see a directors cut.

I thought he said "Witch" :) :) Hmmm....not one of the best female interviewers I've ever seen. She made me feel uncomfortable just watching from the outside!! He was a perfect Gentleman though! :)
