@ARYA, I think my way of watching is oposite: first time I just enjoy and then I am looking for details (sometime only some particular minutes)

I got back from seeing 47 Ronin and I was really impressed with this movie. Keanu played the role of Kai very well and the movie was really well done. It was well worth the lack of sleep to go and see. But I won't give out any details of the movie for the people that have to wait to see it. All I have to say is that this movie is worth watching in theaters.

@Dz0 I admire your restraint. I often think how it would be better, for me, to know less about Keanu's movies before I see them. But, that has been impossible so I just try to go in with an open mind and an open heart and do several viewings during its run at the theater. After the first few I am able to just relax into the enjoyment of the tales Keanu wants us to know. And he has not steered me wrong yet.

Arya, this last about not being steered wrong by Keanu's work is so true. For me, it's now going on 20 years of never being disappointed.

People, today when waiting in line to get tickets for 47 Ronin, I had an idea...

Let's take photos of our cinema admission tickets, until we gather... 47, and perhaps Ani can put together a nice collage in photoshop.... and we'll put that on our front page. And send the final image to Universal, too...
I provide the first eight tickets, and will add two more tomorrow. That makes 10. We need 37 more. Every ticket counts....
It's a joke, it's a statement, it's... whatever you want to call it.

We were Keanu's SWAT Team, once.
Maybe we can be Keanu's ronins, too. If only for one day...

Please?

Arya, it is surely possible. Dogstar 1995-1999? Was it 2000? Not sure. In the northeast, mostly, but not exclusively. Cape May, what a good time was had there :-(
All over Matrix boards until it became impossible "you think he can do no wrong!"
Sigh. He's human, of course he is probably, possibly as capable of messing up as I am (though probably not). Good times, bad times, everything in between, finally driven away screaming by Topix and UGossip/JTJ. Have adored Keanu the whole time, and have never been disappointed.
Heck, I've been disappointed more by school administrators, by propane delivery, you name it, then ever by Keanu. He gets a pass for "The Watcher" (which could have, should have been good - how does anyone mess up Keanu AND James Spader AND Marisa Tomei?) I just find Generation Um... disturbing, as it is doubtless intended to be, because of my job.
Quite a saga, probably you have one too.
It feels really good to land here, among people who clearly feel the same way. Thank you for asking.

@MmeRenard I would only know you by whatever you were calling yourself on the internets. So I guess we will start here. Not a bad place to start. Surely a big improvement over ugossip or topix.

the 47 Ronin saga, explained. not without bias or prejudice, but hey. the movie is a bit more actual than a few might like to think ;)

I would like to offer a couple of insights regarding the fate of 47 Ronin failure in the “Asian market” mentioned at the beginning of this article.

1) The “Asian market” consists of very diverse and sometimes-at-odds countries. The connection of this movie to a Japanese historical story often used to illustrate traditional Japanese values of the honor of loyalty and glory of sacrifice and the mainly Japanese cast spelled doom for this movie from the start in China and South Korea. There was never any hope for this movie, at this time, being embraced in those to major markets.

2) The movie also faced obstacles here in Japan, the only place where 47 Ronin ever had any hope of making money. First, the addition of all the fantasy elements really took the well known, traditional story too far beyond where people were willing to go with it. 47 Ronin would have had a better chance for success in Japan if it had a different title – spinning itself as it really was intended to be…a samurai “Lord of the Rings.” Next, there is a suspicion in Japan that the release of the 47 Ronin caused the release of the Hobbit 2 to be delayed for two and a half months until February 28, 2014. Some people, including me, actually advocated boycotting 47 Ronin in protest of the delay of the Hobbit 2.

On the topic of that Variety comment, I find it a tad bizarre that the Japanese would suddenly be upset that the re-telling of this tale with mythological creatures would some how be an issue. Has anyone seen the list (which is rather long) of mythological creature that Japan has? I'll post the wiki link here but it is quite long.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_legendary_creatures_from_Japan

Also, if one doesn't know anything about Seppuku, Ronin, Bushido code than they may struggle to understand why this didn't have the a-typical Western happy ending.

Oh and I read one review that said it made no sense for Sanada's character to go find Reeves character. 100% disagree on that, wondered did they watch the same movie? (as I'm sure you all do too)

Now, the theater I went to here in Florida was packed. Never seen this place so full (just not for 47...) every movie was sold out. The couple in front of me ended up seeing Ronin instead and in the half-full theater showing it, the audience seemed to enjoy it. They laughed when it was appropriate and no groans, moans or complaining. So there you have it.

Yes but my mind wonders if Universal didn't support it (specifically the write-down) due to tax purposes. In the US Dec 31st ends the fiscal year (in Aus it was at a sensible time of year -the end of June) Most businesses want some losses at this time of year; you pay less in taxes with a good loss. No business of any size is beyond finding losses for the end of a fiscal year.

Finding losses is one thing, throwing their own movie under the bus is another. Anyone knows it wasn't gonna bring in 175 mil. in the first week. But that doesn't mean throwing it out in the rain, either.

Just an example: when Gravity was launched, Warner offered a luncheon to all the media and press d*cks who then praised the movie to outer space and back. That's PR, people. Universal didn't lift a finger to promote 47 Ronin for the above mentioned keyboard pushers.

IF 47 Ronin were a bad or so-so movie, I wouldn't be so pissed about this lack of implication from its own producing studio. But it's a beautiful movie , and its only fault (IMO) is the lack of backstory which, I highly suspect, is due to the editing wars and NOT the director's fault. I never thought I'd have to defend a movie against its own producers, but apparently life can still offer me surprises. Oh well.
