"Throwaway account because I don't want anyone to figure out who I am, because I know I will get fired. I work at a very well known hotel and we get a lot of celebrities. When I first started working there is was pretty amazing, then you get to see that most of these people are total a-holes. They always get their way, so you can never say "no" in fact it's a rule that we never say the "n" word, we apologize and say something else. Anyways, Keanu has been to our hotel several times, and he is the only guy that actually remembered my name, after about the 4th time checking him in! "Wait, don't tell me....Ashley right?" (not my real name :p), it was so cool, he has a great smile :) And a great sense of humor, he's also the most down to earth person, doesn't have a chip on his shoulder. Anyways he came in really early one time and his room wasn't ready, I told him we could switch it, but he said he would wait the 10 min or so until it was ready (no one ever waits and it was just bad timing). Anyways, this VP from a very well known corporation comes down with his daughter, basicly dragging her behind him, she's crying and holding her doll, he tells her to "shut up and go wait for your mom over there", he tells us he was late for a meeting and his wife would be back from shopping to get her soon so he wanted us to watch her. I called security over and a couple of guys kept a close eye on her (this happens alot). Anyways, Keanu saw the whole thing and started making funny faces at her, she started smiling and then after a few minutes he was playing peek-a-boo with the little girl for like 5 min. Then I kid you not, for the next 45min until the mom showed up he was listening to this little girl talk about her doll and describe all the things they do together. She had no clue who he was, it was so funny. The mom showed up and she ran over because they had to leave, but she whispered something into her moms ear then ran back and gave him a big hug and left. Then he finally checked in when she left. I've told the story so many times, he's treated as royalty here now."

Keanu Reeves, one hell of an actor who apparently doesn’t listen to advice when it comes to picking roles (The Day The Earth Stood Still remake, Johnny Mnemonic, etc.), found the right role with Pacino. The two of them go hand in hand like ham and eggs.

... I hope he never will (listen) ;)

Ham and eggs? There's a picture for you. Which one is the ham and which the egg? ;)

I'm with you LucaM!

Thanks for the link, Luca!

Frankly, I wouldn't call Keanu 'one of the most versatile actors in contemporary American cinema'. He (apparently) has a lot of qualities, both as an actor and as a person, but 'most versatile' he is not.
But the man seems to have a genuine love for film, cinema and storytelling in its various forms. And that makes him much more than just an actor.

Luca, I'm curious why you don't think he's versatile?

Anyone got a spare HK$40,000 lying around? We could get a WINM table at the gala.

BlueGem - I don't think he's one of the most versatile actors in contemporary American cinema. In my book, that title goes to Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti and -lately- Gary Oldman.

Keanu has played a wide range of characters in almost all film genres, but he still has to play a really villainous villain (although there is hope. and I really really wish he'll play Hyde - one day. ) Or a classic comedy. (And no, Henry doesn't really count, although I love him. ;)) Or the psychotic cook of the untitled chef script that never became a movie...
The skills are there; in Thumbsucker, he gave us three splendid 'snippets' of what he could do, if only given the right conjecture. But he's holding back, sort of. Back in the early days, he used to let go, acting-wise, or so it seemed. Then life and Hwood happened. In my selfishness, as fan and cinephile, I hope one day the dam will break.
Don't get me wrong; I do think he's versatile. But from that to 'one of the most versatile'... there is still some distance to be covered.

LucaM, thanks for explaining. That makes a lot of sense - I've kind of felt the same way but didn't have words for it. Versatile, but hasn't really hit the full range of possibilities yet. It was easier when he was an angry rebellious young man. Now -- Holding back, yes (or maybe 'held back'?), but I think he is going to bust out one of these days and surprise the hell out of everyone. He just needs the right situation to line up. I like how he is playing with producing, writing, directing, etc. right now. This is really good for him. One day he'll just knock it out of the park.

I agree with you, Luka, that saying one of the MOST versatile actors ... is probably a bit 'exaggerated'? But reading such lines made me VERY happy, because I love when someone says anything positive about him.
However, I do think he IS versatile, in a way. Maybe it's what BlueGem said, that he needs the right situation. And as you said yourself, the skills are there.

I am sure the term "versatile" has drummed up ideas in your heads about what that might be. I do not feel it is any exaggeration that he is one of the most versatile actors. I vote that all his characterizations are wonderful and honest in their own way and if some limited mob mentality of critics don't see it that way well, whatever.
