Keanu Reeves might have been named the internet’s newest boyfriend, but the Toy Story 4 actor missed the memo.

Speaking with PEOPLE on the Toy Story 4 premiere‘s red carpet on Tuesday, Reeves, 54, was surprised to learn of his new title.

“I’ve been what?” he said when asked how he felt about the web’s obsession with him.

“That’s, uh, that’s wacky,” the actor said. “Well, the positivity’s great.”

Reeves was on the acting level of Nicholas Cage before the John Wick movies in the eyes of the average IGN community member.

You're not entirely wrong, and I consider myself part of the mob you're referring to... but I've been trying to figure out why.

I think there are a combination of factors - 1) John Wick (referring to the first, but still relevant despite diminishing returns on 2/3) was just that great. It was cool, but needed an actor with a lot of heart to sell the role, both in terms of visceral action and emotional loss - we believed him in the character fully. Which leads into

2) He's incredibly sincere. Keanu Reeves always just seems like that guy who'll throw himself into your project entirely because he appreciates its importance to someone. I could be reading into too much there, but it seems to be a consensus shared by those he works with, and genuinely shines through in his roles... sometimes too much. That one facial expression back in the day tended to be one where I felt his mind was going a mile a minute (in character)... which can make you look silly on camera.

3) He's gotten older. I genuinely think this may be the biggest key to his newfound fame. I don't think Keanu's attitude in Hollywood has changed all that much over the years - it's just a lot easier to buy that level of sentimentality and sincerity from someone who seems a little more world-weary than your typical Bill and Ted "woah".

All those combined, and now after all these years when Keanu really leans into Keanu, it seems less like a role that we laugh at and more like an actor in Hollywood being entirely unself-aware for once, and we're all suddenly in on the joke.
